More specifically, this is considering the "Staff weapon" ability, where they say a magical staff has (for the staff magus) an enhancement equal to it's CL/4.
However, as far as I know, all pre-existing staves are CL 15 or lower. Anything better either has to be an artifact OR custom.
So, as far as I know, when you custom craft you must always use the lowest caster level of the spell used. So, for a single spell:
400*CL*Spell Level
So as far as I can tell, you cant have more than a +4 on a staff from this power. Can somebody prove me wrong?
I know you can boost the CL on prepared wands & scrolls, but how about staves? Can you have a staff of fireballs at CL 20?

The problem being, a staff normally casts using the caster's normal spell level, and not the inherent CL of the item, like for all other magical items. Which is why I have some doubt...
Why is that a problem? And you can use your own CL if it's better, but you don't have to.
I thought the schtick with staves was that they used the wielders caster level, so they scaled as you do. Or is that a feat? My memory is admittedly hazy on the topic. That could be the lack of sleep too. Gonna go grab some shut eye now, I think...
The best staff for a staff magus is to use Spear Dancing Spiral to grab a fauchard, naginata, or similar polearm.
Enchant it via normal rules + arcane pool.

Reference: Staff Weapon. This makes a normal magic staff double as an enchanted quarterstaff. It uses the staff's CL, not the wielder's CL with the staff.
Crafting a custom staff, you can make one from your caster level down to 8th. For a single spell staff, cost is 400*SL*CL/#charges with price double. Minimum staff cost for a staff that uses 1 charge per spell is 6400. [Cost 3200.]
