Up-close Gunslinger

Advice

So, yeah. I want to make a Gunslinger that's almost as dangerous up close as he is at a distance.

I actually have two vague character concepts that borrow the same rough concept. The first idea is like a Zorro-type character, a dashing swordsman with a black powder pistol tucked in his belt, and a rapier or longsword or something that he runs people through with, while giving off some classic quip or rubbing his incredibly well-groomed mustache. You know, lots of finesse, lots of Errol Flynn stuff going on.

The second would be fore a more advanced setting, and he'd be more dark. Like, a turn of the century Deathstroke, some guy who has big ideas for the world and establishing himself as some big businessman, but he needs the capital to do something like that. And that's why he sets himself up as a general gun-for-hire, you know, an all-purpose mercenary who takes jobs at the tavern. Until he can move on to bigger and better things.

But in either case, I don't want them to be limited to their guns. So, how do I do this if I maybe can't just spread stats around, or if I roll and I don't get good enough sets to waste? Are there feats that might make up for a low or average strength stat? Any tricks or so that you'd recommend? Put your heads together, chillun, let's see what we can do here.

I hate to say it, but dervish dance.

We were dervish dancing in the dark?

What books are allowed?

What races are allowed?

What is the point buy?

Potentially anything in the universe. These aren't for games, I just make characters in my head then keep an eye out for games they could fit in.

So go nuts, really. Keep in mind, I usually like humans for Gunslingers. The triumph of human ingenuity and all that.

Also-also, I usually roll for stats.

Ratfolk, with levels Gulch Gunner, and maybe a dip into Trench Fighter.

Want to throw in a sword? Nab the Dervish Dance feat.

You could just nab an Agile weapon as well

Eugh. Ratfolk.

All that other stuff sounds like a great idea.

Grand Lodge

Well, Racial Heritage(Ratfolk) allows the archetype.

You can nab the feat as a Human, Half-Elf, Half-Orc, or Scion of Humanity Aasimar.

So I'd just have a sliver of Ratfolk in me? Look like I sell heroin or something?

Grand Lodge

Master Splinter looks down upon your disapproval.

Yeah, I'll keep that in mind if the BBEG is Shredder.

Grand Lodge

What do you have against Rats?

Even your name suggests a vampire theme, noted master, and friend to the Rat.

You got me there, Nosferatu the plague carrier is a fantastic monster.

I just don't want to be a walking rat unless I drive a motorcycle and come from Mars.

Grand Lodge

Those are mice.

If it hurts you so, just to have the tiniest bit of Ratfolk blood, then maybe you can just ask your DM if you can take the archetype.

A standard pistolero with deft shootist / point blank master + snap shot feat tree is probably more effective.

Or even just ask for access to the archetype on another race, there's nothing super ratfolky about it.

It's very much the best in "Don't shoot until you see the whites of their eyes? I don't shoot until I can see the tears glisten on their cheeks."

Unfortunately that also makes it very dangerous, and best played in a group in which someone is playing a bodyguard (either martial or shield other).

Oh yeah, even if this build is done right, it's gonna be high-risk at the best of times.

A pistolero with the deft shootist feat can be bad ass in melee range.

You could've just been raised by rat folk. There need not be anything genetic.

If it makes you feel better, maybe the character then killed his whole rat folk family, got hit in the head really hard somehow, and completely forgot his ratty past.
