Canny Defense and a double check on a Fighter / Duelist

Rules Questions

Canny Defense wrote:

When not wearing armor or using a shield, a duelist adds 1 point of Intelligence bonus (if any) per duelist class level to her Dexterity bonus to modify Armor Class while wielding a melee weapon. If a duelist is caught flat-footed or otherwise denied her Dexterity bonus, she also loses this bonus.

So I bought Celestial Armor for this character which caps my Dexterity bonus at 8 of course...

Does that mean if I have a Dexterity bonus of 8 I get nothing from Canny Defense?

If yes it would mean that in the long run I would be better off with Bracers of Armor.

This would be the second error I made with this build. The first was not noticing/forgetting that Power Attack needed a Strength of 13....so I want to put up the build as a double check to make sure I got the rest of the things right.

20 point build; most sources are available but no 3.5 only Pathfinder. No traits. Equipment Level - 1 Wealth per Level.

She will be starting the game at a possible level of 13.

Vala Fighter/Duelist:

Race: Sylph (using Breeze Kissed and Whispering Wind)
Favoured Class: Fighter (Free Hand Fighter)
Starting Stats: Str 13 Dex 15 Con 14 Int 14 Wis 10 Cha 10
Ending Stats: Str 13(+1) Dex 26(+8) Con 12(+1) Int 22(+6) Wis 10 (+0) [i]Cha[i] 10(+0)

Feats/Level/Stat Bonus

1Fgt1 Weapon Focus(Scimitar), Weapon Finesse
2Fgt2 Dervish Dance
3Fgt3 Dodge
4Fgt4 Mobility, Dex+1
5Fgt5 Weapon Specialization (Scimitar)
6Fgt6 Power Attack
7Due1 Aery Step
8Due2 Dex +1
9Due3 Wings of Air
10Due4 Combat Reflexes
11Due5 Inner Breath
12Due6 Dex+1
13Due7 Critical Focus

Equipment: Celestial Armor (getting rid of I think), Cold Iron Keen Scimitar+2, Belt of Incredible Dexterity +6, Headband of Vast Intelligence +6, Amulet of Natural Armor +1, Ring of Protection +1, Ring of Sustenance, Cloak of Resistance, Handy Haversack, Pathfinder's Kit

38 AC Breakdown: Celestial Armor 9 AC, Dexterity +8, Ring of Protection +1 Deflection, Amulet of Natural Armor 1 Natural, Elusive +2 Dodge, Dodge +1 Dodge, Canny Defense +6 Untyped or so I thought...

21/16/10 Attack Breakdown: BAB +13; Dexterity +8, Enhance 2, Weapon Focus +1, Singleton +1, Power Attack -4

28 Damage Breakdown: Dexterity 8, Enhance +2, Singleton +1, Weapon Specialization 2, Precise Strike +7, Power Attack +8

No as canny defense is a dodge bonus. It does not stack with the Dexterity to AC. So it does not count towards your max dex bonus from armors.

Did you miss the limitation on Canny Defense?

That's 3 statements, all of which are wrong, and the source text was on the page right in front of your eyes as you wrote this. I'm actually kind of impressed.

Yeah I missed that; so many abilities that said afterwards when wearing light armor and not using a shield that I started skimming and not reading.

Got her a Ring of Protection +2 and Bracers of Armor +4 instead so she lowered to AC 34. Still decent.

Thank you for pointing out to me what I should have been able to just read.

NP. But, ooh, +4 bracers of armor? I really don't like those. Don't you have an arcane caster in the party? A lesser Extend Rod and two pearls of power in exchange for non-stop Mage Armor is a good deal for the caster and a fantastic deal for you.

Canny Defense (Ex): When wearing light or no armor and not using a shield, a duelist adds 1 point of Intelligence bonus (if any) per duelist class level as a dodge bonus to her Armor Class while wielding a melee weapon. If a duelist is caught flat-footed or otherwise denied her Dexterity bonus, she also loses this bonus.

So Pupsocket, I looked at his question and then looked at the rules, so if you are impressed thank you.

....

The book says it adds to Dexterity.

My App says the Dodge bonus thing that brad 2411 mentions.

and where ever I copy and pasted that rule at the top says another...

Duelist Class

I'm going with that. It agrees with the app and gives me a 38 AC again.

Quote:

Duelist--Canny Defense: Is this ability limited by my armor's maximum Dexterity?

A duelist adds her Int bonus to her AC (not to her Dex bonus to AC). She loses that Int-based AC bonus under any situation where she's denied her Dex bonus to AC.
Her Int-based bonus to AC ignores the max Dex limitation of armor because the Int-based bonus to AC is not a Dex bonus.
(This Int bonus to AC applies to the character's touch AC.)

I'm not normally one to jump on people about this but type "duelists canny defense" in the search box....the FIRST link has the FAQ

Been a lot of people lately not searching...it really does help to do so :)

Don't let anybody make you feel too silly about this. Your book says something different because it was printed before the pathfinder devs made that change to canny defense.

Apologies if my above post seemed "mean"...meant it in the nicest way I promise

Sure you did :P

Liberty's Edge

to the OP.
I checked the second printing and it already said "wearing light or no armor". I have checked the 1 to 5th printing errata, and there is no change in the text of Canny defense.
The d20PFSRD you linked has the right text.
So your source for the rules it at least questionable. Maybe you are using the playtest rules for Pathfinder instead of the final rules?

The text you cite AFAIK is that of the 3.5 version of the ability.

For referencing rules I usually have my physical book and an app. When making this topic I did a quick internet search to find the rule so I could post it; must have clicked on the wrong link...as you say.

I think the rest of her is correct and I'm happy I get to keep the armor and it doesn't interfere with the ability.

...allright, the egg is on my face, not yours. Still, it's good form to inform people that they're quoting the wrong rules.
