My advice - get a bird. Something that flies at least, and preferably diminutive for a +4 to attack & AC. Flying around it'll ignore many attacks of opportunities as well as offer few points of attack. Among other things, I think you'd get a +1 bonus to attacks due to having high ground. Might only apply to higher ground on actual ground tho.
Don't forget avians can equip a few items! Armor, belt, chest, eyes, headband, neck, ring, & wrist slots.
