New Ms. Marvel

Comics

The first issue of the new Ms. Marvel is out, and it's great. Written by G. Willow Wilson, art by Adrian Alphona (from Runaways).

Here's a sketch by Alfona of some of the main cast. And a NY Times article on the comic, from back when it was first announced.

This was, for me, one of the better comics Marvel's put out in the past few years. Worth a look, if you've got $3 to spare.

What happened to the old Ms. Marvel?

She's now Captain Marvel.

And may appear in an upcoming movie by that name. So that no one will ever recall that the name originated with Fawcett Comics in the early 20th century. Good work Mr. Lee. Not.

These days, the previous Ms. Marvel looks like this.

The new Ms. Marvel is a big fan of hers, a regular teenage girl from New Jersey who writes Avengers fan fic, and who gains superpowers.

I'd love to see a Captain Marvel movie. And I think now with the acceptance of female protagonists, it would be an excellent time.

For extra credit, who can list every superhero identity she's gone under?

Ms. Marvel
Binary
Warbird
Captain Marvel

I think that's all of them

That's the one. She's also made a few appearances simply as deadly agent Carol Danvers. If I remember correctly, at some point, she did eventually recover both the powers and memories stolen from her by Rouge, who no longer possesses them.

Do you also remember all of the people who've gone by the name Ms.Marvel?

Carol Danvers, of course (I always loved Carol Danvers, even when she drank)
Sharon Ventura, wrestler and former girlfriend of the Thing
Karla Sofen, formerly Moonstone, promiscuous psychologist
and the new one I'm not so familiar with, so I had to look her up, Kamala Khan

It was but hey DC erased that universe, so they're not using it...

I'm not interested in a new book, but I do hope they have some comparison/meetings between her, Dust and Monet. Three women of about the same age, three different social levels and three different takes on the same faith.

That's not too much to ask is it?

I pretty much loved every bit of that book, including the "Deus Ex Mutanta" powers origin... weird as it was.

So tragic.

What I was talking about in my last post. DC is apparently renouncing any claim to the copyright, and now have him call himself "Shazam." Supposedly because everyone thought that was his name. Both IRL and in-universe. Since the only time he says SHAZAM it is to change between forms, that last half doesn't wash. And it brings up the CM3 issue.

For those who don't recall, in Post-Crisis continuity, Freddie Freeman said "Captain Marvel" to change (as he did pre-crisis), so if he tried to identify himself as "Captain Marvel Jr." the lightning would come down and change him back before he was finished saying "Junior." So he called himself CM3.

So how does the lightning, post-flashpoint know when Billy is calling for it, and when he is telling people his name?

The real tragedy is that DC/National fought Fawcett over the character, and ended up buying him. But the character's 70+ year history is being abandoned. In a few years, Marvel will have exclusive ownership of the name, and all that history will be lost. DC won't even be able to republish any of that history, as it all bears a name they no longer will have the rights to.

I think I read it ties into their bing 'inhumanity' event.

I like the old costume, but much prefer the newer one. I'd actually say that it's one of the better female superhero costumes around these days.

I did notice some definite Terrigen qualities to that whole thing.

The new Captain Marvel costume is the best.

To me Carol Danvers is the best Captain Marvel, an ace pilot and secret agent, she gained her powers when an alien wishing machine exploded. She vowed to become the world's greatest hero. That's 100% iconic. Captain Marvel is someo of the best writing in comics at the moment. Buy it.

I really like G. Willow Wilson as a writer, if you can try to find her book "Cairo" it's a great adventure and an excellent primer for anyone who is going to run Legacy of Fire or Mummy's Mask.

As to Ms. Marvel, I liked the first issue and will probably keep up via Comixology. Being torn between two cultures, and living in the underdog city of Jersey there's stories to be told and to be honest: I'm a sucker for young heroes, because they will make the best kinds of mistakes to complicate a story.

Am I crazy, or did I hear somewhere that Ms. Marvel was a lesbian or there was a lesbian story line or something?

You might be thinking of the Dark Reign Ms. Marvel, which was actually Moonstone who had taken the title at Norman Osborn's direction. If memory serves she's pansexual, but mostly to manipulate people with her sexuality (because evil?)

She also did a nice four issue mini called Mystic. Well-written, great art by David Lopez, with covers by Amanda Conner.

So far it's only one book in but I'm instantly a fan of anything that uses my hometown add the setting
