I have a character building a summoner who would also like a familiar. Is this doable with a feat, or perhaps swapping out a class ability? Thank you for your assistance.

Eldritch Heritage for arcane bloodline. Requires Skill Focus in any knowledge skill.

Eldritch Heritage is the usual route. If you use 3.5 material Obtain Familiar is probably the easier route.
Besides the eldrich heritage feat that your summoner will also like to get the more advanced versions of. There is rogues and magi that can get one as a talent it a arcana. And several cleric domains also give a familiar.
