Hey all, I've got a question concerning cards being taken out of the game completely. I've been playing weekly with friends of mine and we're approaching the hook Mountain Massacre adventure and we're all pretty excited. I remember going through the rule book and noting when the restrictions for Basic only picks being lifted when we start but I'm curious. Was there ever a rule or statement that said certain cards would be taken out of the game completely? Like all the basic cards would be removed from the initial building of loation decks or did I just imagine it? I swear I skimmed that somewhere in the rulebook. If anyone could clarify this for me, that'd clear up the confusion I'm going through.
TL;DR: Will cards ever come out of the game to make room for new ones from future Adventure decks?

When you start deck 3, banes with the basic trait MUST, and boons with the basic trait MAY, be removed from the game whenever they are banished during play.
Important things to note:
If you are simply instructed to "return cards to the box", that is not the same as "banishing". The end result is the same (they go back to the box), but that doesn't mean "banish" means the same thing as "return to the box", or vice versa. It's kind of like the geometrical truth that "every square is a rectangle but not every rectangle is a square"...if that makes any sense.
Also, don't forget that permanently closing a location results in the banishment of all remaining cards, except for any villains that may be there. This will probably result in the most opportunities for removal.
Lastly, don't forget that you can choose to fail any check to acquire a boon, resulting in its banishment and an opportunity to get rid of it for good...unless you REALLY have a thing for daggers and wooden shields.

In this pack of files at BGG I made a little worksheet that can help you keep track of what you removed (since you probably have to put them all back in the box anyway). It also has a list of what is banished and a few examples of what is not banished. You might find it helpful.

but wooden shields are so awesome!
Actually, there are times when it's necessary...we were finishing up Hook Mountain last night and my Harsk was down to 0 cards to draw...so I was accumulating things simply for hit points. Got a sweet shortbow and some potion of puke that I would have rather banished - but hey, a dwarf's gotta drink something (he was out of tea)

On this topic - if I have a complaint about the game (ahem, complaint follows) it's that the extra work in managing parallel adventures is not worth it. There's already a lot of shuffling and management in the inter-game setup and deck selection/rejection. All works fine but running > 1 game I just cannot face. I have two reasons why I want to do this: 1. to try out all the characters 2. to introduce my daughter to the game.
Looking down the line, once S&S starts to ship this will be less of a concern, since then I can run different APs concurrently without a prohibitive context switch for different groups.
I do think Paizo could have an opportunity here to add a "Digital Party Manager" that eases the task of running multiple groups through the same AP at the same time. I am convinced that a computerized randomizer would do a better job than I do of really shuffling the location decks and player decks, too. This would also simplify the task of rules updates, card text typos and errors, since the rules and assets are codified in the program.
I'd pay a premium on the PACG subscription for something like that. In my dreams, I play my primary group with the physical cards, but I can still run other character groups digitally.
