Frostbite spell

Pathfinder First Edition General Discussion

Ok, I hope the sysop can direct me cuz this is my second attempt to 1)get my question in the right place and 2)know where the answers are.

Is there a cap to the first level spell "Frostbite" damage? It says d6 +1 per level but lists no maximum. Potentially it could do as much as d6+20 hp but feels like its damage should be cut off at some point.
It also gets one touch per level with the same problem.
What do you use?

Thanks,
SerpentViolet

It's non lethal too which is odd but flavorful and overall you have it right and it's an awesome magus spell :)

As written, no limit. At level 20, it deals d6+20 per touch and you're able to use the touch up to 20 times on a single casting; you can hold the charge indefinitely so long as you don't cast another spell or it is dispelled in some other manner.

2 people marked this as a favorite.

Believe me the uncapped static damage isn't the "problematic" part of the spell, the no save fatigue might be.

The damage isn't a problem unless you have a Druid with this spell as the rules for holding a spell, Touch attacks and damaging a foe with a natural or unarmed strike can swiftly turn this cute little L1 spell into a boss killer.

If it gets out of hand the Druid spell Produce flame has a similar effect that Caps at 1d6+5. though if you are going to do that I would at least change Frostbite to dealing true cold damage.

Adding the Rime spell MM feat to it so you can Fatigue and Entangle with one action is pretty nasty too. Get that and a rod of Reach spell, Shoot frosty non-lethal laser beams that stick people to the ground and make them tired.

It is non lethal damage which makes a difference. The fatigue isn't really that bad, -1 to hit/damage/AC for the most part (essentially roughly what Bless does) and how often does someone you've engaged in melee combat with charge away?

The Rime spell is a little useful but as it only lasts 1 round (duration is based on the level of the spell it is attached to), not particularly great as you have to reapply it every round with another successful attack.

But a metamagic rod of Daze IS great...

You can be getting 3-4 daze attempts a round with this spell (as a magus).

So if you wanted to take it overboard:
Get rime spell feat
enforcer feat
cruel weapon enchantment
dazzling display + shatter defenses
Daze meta magic rod

For a total effect of:

-6 attack rolls (not including ability damages here), -2 damage rolls, -2 strength, -6 dexterity, -4 saving throws, -4 skill and ability checks (think acrobatics, intimidate and bluff), 2x cannot run or charge, cannot make AoOs against your attacks, loss of dexterity bonus to AC against your attacks (apply dexterity damage before this) and unable to take any actions.

All that from two hits and successes on the intimidate check (easy) and the daze effect (will save, not so easy).

But thats if your really TRYING to make frostbite your number one spell.

Removed an unnecessarily combative post. Please keep your comments civil.

Well the party barbarian would not be able to rage if they lost initiative and then had someone hit them with the frostbite spell.

Also my interpretation of ferocity is that it only works if you are in in negative hit points and does not make you immune to being unconcious. so it can help you capture orcs alive.
