The Mounted Witch

Advice

I have a concept for a Small Sized Witch (Halfling, Gnome, etc.) mounted on a wolf or similar animal. This is to help me move around the battlefield, keeping within 30 feet of enemies and cackling away.

Now I don't believe that the witch class comes with a medium sized animal as a mount. Even the Animal Patron spell doesn’t include access to the medium sized mount. The witch does get a familiar however, which is great.

My question, is what is the best way to gain a mount in the game. I’m not really keen on dipping into one level of Cavalier or Druid although I may have to. Is there a feat that allows access to a mount? Figurines of Wonderous Power are an option but they have limited duration, same with spells such as Mount and Phantom Steed. Any advice is welcome.

You can always buy a normal mount. That's the cheapest way.

Er, buy one? Trained dogs are extremely cheap.

Eventually you can use Leadership to gain the service of a monstrous cohort, or if your GM allows choosing Wildblooded bloodlines, Eldritch Heritage (Sylvan) gets you an Animal Companion.

Cohort through the Leadership feat.

Your party druid's animal companion.

Your party druid.

Summon Monster spells.

A wish spell.

Bribing the GM.

Trust me, I had the same question. I actually had a normal riding dog until level 9, when he took a fireball to the face. The party actually paid to raise the dog, but I had to retire him and rely on the Cackling Blouse and flying.

The feat you are looking for is Animal Ally. There is a feat tax of Nature Soul, one of those '+2 to two skills' feats, and you will probably want to take Boon Companion to get your pet up to par, but you can do it pretty easily and without even loosing any caster levels from dipping.

Also, you might be able to bribe your GM to let you houserule a feat to allow your familiar to be a bigger animal, I don't think it would be too unbalanced.
