Freedom's Call

Rules Questions

Freedom's Call (Su): At 8th level, you can emit a 30-foot aura of freedom for a number of rounds per day equal to your cleric level. Allies within this aura are not affected by the confused, grappled, frightened, panicked, paralyzed, pinned, or shaken conditions. This aura only suppresses these effects, and they return once a creature leaves the aura or when the aura ends, if applicable. These rounds do not need to be consecutive.

We were playing a game and a froghemoth grappled someone and our cleric used this and were wondering how this actually affects grapple, would the froghemoth be able to swallow him whole or does he just somehow magically explode breaking the grapple

If so then isnt this power extremely powerful when not in a dungeon because thats 10 rounds right now and very few fights last that long

I am not sure if I am understanding your question but based on the scenario that you gave, the grappled character would be able to slip out of the froghemoth's grasp on the character's next turn. There is no explosion that I am aware of but he would not be able to be swallowed whole as that is a part of a grapple where the creature can take the next step to put the character in his belly.

It is a very powerful ability. Especially since the rounds do not need to be consecutive, so he could use two now if needed and one later and then the rest after that when needed. It is not, however, unbalanced compared to other things that a high level cleric or other character could do.

That is more or less what I'm asking. It just seems since the liberation cleric came in most of the effects that target us are useless because he immediately casts freedom of movement on himself and then uses freedom's call whenever anything would arise that might be a bit of a bother.

The question was mainly to determine the hypothetical way it suppresses the grapple in relation to the monster

It says under swallow whole that you can "escape the grappled condition" and that puts you back in the attacker's mouth.

Initiate automatic vomit!

The target is unaffected by the Grappled condition and is free to move away from the creature. "If the swallowed creature escapes the grapple, it is placed back into the mouth..." so Freedom's Call would place you back in the mouth and then you'd slip free since the mouth can't grapple you either.

Liberation Clerics rock.

You are correct in saying that a cleric with the Liberation Domain basically makes all of those listed effects much less powerful because he can just override them. It the same as saying that a party with a higher level wizard or sorcerer with Fly can just cast it on half the party and they carry the rest over the 100 foot chasm so now obstacles like that are no longer a huge issue, just a minor road bump.

How it works is divine magic. His god wishes him to be able to free himself and his allies within 30 feet and so he does.

If the character were already swallowed whole, then you could make arguments dealing with line of effect of the aura. I would personally rule it as the DM that the mouth is open enough to affect the character inside. That is not official, but it is how I would rule it. I would think that if the character is in the gullet and not passed down into the stomach and intestines of the beast, then enough of a hole would be open to allow the effect to go through to the character. I do not think it is wise to get into the exact digestive process of the Froghemoth at the table and err on the side of the players in this case.
