Say you're trying to vote a list of numbers into numerical order. Your first pairing is 2 and 4. You vote for the 4, so now the system knows that 4 is higher on the list than 2. Next you get 4 and 3; again you vote for 4, so the system doesn't know exactly where to put 3, just that it's less than 4 (so it puts 2 and 3 as a tie). Eventually somebody gets 2 and 3 as a pair and votes for 3, so now this part of the list is sorted. If there's a glitch, and you're given 2 and 3 again, you vote for 3. All that does is tell the computer to put 3 ahead of 2. No matter how many times you vote for 3 in that pairing, 3 will never move higher than 4.

The other day I got same pair 6 times in a row (only switched sides on one of the pairs none of the others) at the same time as several other people seemingly to get the same pair anywhere from 3-7 times, and not just them seeing their two items paired, but several people seeing the same two exact items paired (or at least as similar as we could describe without Dairy Queening ourselves). It was really weird and prolly happens fairly rarely...

1) The FAQ sez:
Can I see all the items?
If you vote often enough, you may see all of the items. You may even see the same items more than once, though they will always be paired with different items.
But I am seeing things not paired with a different item. The FAQ doesn't say "likely" or "usually", it says "always". If I've seen it once and the Timster has seen it apparently six times then that' s a bug with the system that should be brought up.
Done.
2) You may know 1<2<3<4 and 10<11<12<13<14 but if you don't get a single pairing between those groups you don't know about how 4 relates to 14.
And with something as finnicky and personal as "is this a good magic item?" You want as many combinations as possible. Knowing a small group of people really think X is better than Y might not be as useful as knowing if a strong majority kinda think X is better than Y.

The FAQ also says:
How do I cast my vote?
You can vote by visiting paizo.com/rpgsuperstar. During the Round 1 voting period, you will be shown two different wondrous item entries, and may pick which of the two you think is better. You can vote as often as you like. Each time you visit, you will be shown a different pair of wondrous items and neither will be one you have seen before.
And:
How does this voting system work?
Items will be presented to voters in random pairs, biased toward items which have been viewed the least. Every item will be voted on before any item is selected for voting again.
I would venture to say the tech squad had hoped to be able to present the voting in the FAQ-defined fashion, but the realities of system resources got in the way. Last year I think Gary said it would be mind-bogglingly taxing on the servers to ensure that every voter saw a different two items every time. Given the pre-contest FAQ, I had hoped they'd found a clever solution to that, but it is what it is. It's the same system we had last year; it worked then, it'll work now.

This, specifically, sounds like a system bug. If I had to guess, I'd say that the db wasn't being updated quickly enough, so the program that picks items to show you didn't realize that you had already voted on the pair. If I had a further guess, I'd say either the vote queue wasn't being processed or a slave db wasn't being updated.

Yes I agree it was a bug. That was why I posted about it in another forum. Before everyone gets concerned, remember, we are using computers to do this stuff! lol I have not noticed anything like the bug the other day, and I'm fairly certain I've not had any other two exact items paired since. But with as many votes I've cast and not being quite as ... "particular" ... with my record keeping, its possible another pair came together again, but I honestly do not think so.

The same thing happened to me last night at about the same time. It also happened to be one of the few times I voted almost as soon as the timer allowed me to. I usually take a bit more time to decide. I'm voting a lot more this year than I was able to last year. I figured it was a random fluke that just happened from time to time.

Or it's a glitch in the Matrix, and they've changed something...
