Question on Trait stacking...

Advice

Per the default rules, you start with two traits, each one needs to be from a different "category". There are 4 basic categories, which are Combat, Faith, Magic and Social traits...

So I was wondering if Magical Lineage (which is listed as a Magic trait) would stack with Metamagic Master (formerly Wayang Spellhunter). I looked up Metamagic Master, assuming it would be a Magic trait, but it isn't listed as such. In fact, it doesn't seem to have a category, other then Regional Trait (but even Regional Traits usually fall within the 4 basic categories).

So do these stack? Am I missing something on Metamagic Master trait?

You're missing the fact that there are several more trait categories. Regional, race, religion, equipment, and campaign are all trait categories as well.

My understanding is that Regional Traits constitute a category unto themselves.

Having said that, a Game Master could certainly rule that two different traits that do identical things don't stack, even if the effects aren't called out as trait bonuses. But I'm not sure it would be overpowering to have two separate spells on which you get cheap metamagic. (Given that Magical Lineage is almost required for a Magus, I'd rather like it, since it would reduce the number of cookie cutter magi one sees....)

Metamagic Master is the d20 site's variation on the original name, Wayang Spellhunter, so that they wouldn't get sued. If this was pfs and you were on my table and said that name instead of the original name, I would ask for book proof. It is like you are saying that you have a Dervish of Dawn.

So? As far as I can tell, this isn't PFS, it isn't at your table, and even if it were, he could simply pull out the appropriate sourcebook (Dragon Empires Primer) and tell you to STFU.

I'm going to be more polite and ask what this comment has to do with the question of whether or not the traits stack.

Then I can simply reply that unless it is a stated bonus, with the exception of untyped or dodge bonus, then they do not stack.

Both Magical Lineage and Wayang Spellhunter do not state that they are trait bonuses, so they can stack.

However, that doesn't mean that replacement effect, like Helpful the Combat trait in Champions of Purity and Helpful the Race trait from Halflings of Golarion, stack, because the both replace the same base effect.

Though of you had checked the forums by searching, or via Google with "Wayang Spellhunter Magical Lineage" there are a few people with the same question as you.

Whether or not you are overly aggressive/hostile towards my previous comment, I did not meant to be offensive in any way. It was mainly to make note that the d20 site, though nice on information gathering, does make a few edits, as well as forget to list some feats/items/etc in their referencing.

This is a frequently asked question in the Rules Forum, and if you do a search over there you'll find the consensus is that the two traits work together. Neither provides a "trait bonus", or really a bonus of any kind, so "stacking" isn't an issue.
