monk trait allowing int instead of wis

Homebrew and House Rules

Would this be unbalancing? Intelligence and wisdom have about the same value.

You could call it Kung-Fu Genius! At worst someone might dip into monk for it, but it doesn't sound awful to me.

Really, Int has LESS value as a stat (barring dips) than Wis. Wis can be a matter of life and death, whether it be a failed Will save or Perception check.

Int is nice to have, but for most classes not a necessity for survival and max effectiveness.

Sounds just fine with me, really.

Int grants skills, and a bunch of knowledge/spell related skill checks? I don't think it's unbalancing, but am interested why you think this flavor is better than wisdom for a monk.

It works fine: Carmendine Monk and Kung-Fu Genius have been floating around for years and haven't broken anything. Making it a trait is slightly more powerful (as a trait is generally worth half a feat), but I think it'd be fine: It's no worse than Student of Philosophy or similar traits.

What would this look like as a dip for a kensei?

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Hmmm I was just thinking about it as a good option for elves or unarmored skill monkeys.I thought it would be fun to be a know it all elf monk.

But a 2 level dip with moms would be awesome for a kensai with this trait.

It was a 3.5 feat from Dragon magazine, Kung Fu Genius. Worked well with a swashbuckler build...

I would counter this by saying it was never worth a feat to begin with.

i would counter your counter by pointing out that if a monk dip for casting stat to AC had so little value, i wouldn't see monk1/empyreal sorcererX builds everywhere. I like the idea personally, but i think it should be carefully balanced as a feat.

So you think it ia too powerful for a trait?
