So my players managed via out side the box think to sink a sailing ship in a single round. So should I award xp based on the whole crew complement of the vessel or is there another way other GMs would suggest?
I would do it via the overall challenge you consider the ship to represent. Also, if they sank it via tactics, teamwork, and so on, I would bump it some. Alternately, include a more hefty IC reward--fame, etc.

I equate experience with actual learning and growth so I would never award xp for anonymous incidentally slaughtered crewmen. I would however offer a substantial story award for the clever play (obviously a learning experience). If you're looking for an actual figure... it sounds like a fairly epic achievement, so I would treat it as APL+3.

Nope not their own ship. It was escorting another ship that they wanted to capture for plot reasons.
Max result with the min effort. I'd reward it. If they had a brilliant idea, I don't see why you shouldn't reward them. This could be accomplished taking in accout a pair of things:
if you had set up the ship to be a challenge, so if they managed to sink or in other way rendered unable to escort, I'd give them the normal amount of xp you setted. In exchange I give them something in game. It could be a free teamwork feat, if it fit the work they'd done, or it could be some nice items. Maybe they manage to find some documents that give them the ownership of a ship, an house, or even a sailing company? I'd surely reward them, but with in play rewards, not xp. After all, they outsmarted you. It was a challenge, but you didn't foresight that way to beat them up, so they deserve a reward.Just for curiosity, could I know how they did?
