Phalanx Soldier Build

Advice

I want to make a fighter character, in the style of a soldier of Gondor, with a shield in one hand and a longspear in the other. I'm open to other archetypes/classes, as long as they still have the phalanx fighting ability, or something similar. The reason I'm asking for help is because the other class abilities of the phalanx soldier are a bit naff, so I'm open to pretty much any ideas.

How about this:

Phalanx Soldier(until you get the 2h in 1h)/Sacred Shield Paladin.

This gives you a lot of fun things to do, playing with reach and being by your allies to minimise the damage around them.
I played a character who was an Oracle of Battle (with the sudden charge revelation), who dipped 2 levels (and eventually 4) into Sacred Shield, then would dip into Phalanx Soldier for the 1handed polearm and continued oracle.

Went with Combat Patrol chain and the sort, a good battlefield controler.

You could go Phalanx soldier 7 / Stalwart Defender and going with lunge, antagonise and the Stalwart feats.

Liberty's Edge

Why not just make a Phalanx Fighter?

What other classes have the phalanx ability (I assume by this you mean the ability to wield a 2h pole-arm/spear 1h while utilizing a shield)?

Like the sound of Sacred Shield/Stalwart defender, I'll check it out. Cheers guys!

Okay I'm gong to apologize, my question has nothing to do with the phalanx soildier but how in the world do I post a new topic on the message boards?

^ Go on the desired section (eg Advice), then, in the top right, just on the left of 'Search this thread', there will be a heading saying 'Start a new thread'. This is the option you want.

Anyway, back to the build. I liked the concept of a Scared Shield dip, but a lot of the paladin abilities rely on charisma, which would usually be a dump stat for a fighter. I really liked the Stalwart Defender, and if this character were to reach level 7, that's probably what I'd do.

You just shift your dump stat to WIS, since paladin's Divine Grace covers the will saves.

Take a look at the Arminger. They gain a talent at second level that can allow them to wield a pole-arm and a shield at the same time. Plus they have tons of defensive abilities. One of my players is using one and he's a very tough nut to crack, not to mention makes the casters he tends to hang out with a fair bit less squishy.

Easier: Quick Draw + light quickdraw shield. It's a combination so good that I'm surprised every fighter in the game doesn't have it before tenth level. (I'm surprised it hasn't been nerfed.) -- It's a bloody *free action* to equip and stow your shield every round! A shield which will eventually be AC+6. And you can 2hPA to your heart's content on your turn.

And you can be a normal archetype fighter who doesn't have to forfeit Weapon Training (and gloves of dueling).

You could go Titan Mauler Barbarian. It lets you wield any 2 handed weapon in 1 hand, along with enlarge person by burning rage rounds, and a small bonus against larger creatures. It isn't great for the typical barbarian with a 2h weapon in 2 hands, because you can't wield larger 2 handed weapons, but its a nice option for sword and board style fighting.

Warning: Some GM's see this as total cheese and don't allow it, even though it is RAW legal. I don't use it because the fluff and the mental image are just all wrong, but that's a personal issue.

I really like the sound of the armiger, although I'll have to confirm with my GM on 3rd party material. ArmouredMonk, I would prefer to keep the image of a disciplined, measured fighter rather than a tribal, reckless warrior.
