Marathon Voter Season 7

yeah, I have an item, Jiggy

I am just doing all of the necessary reading as well as trying to find out how to calculate the cost of magic items through some sort of combination of math, matching, luck and sorcery

I should be done catching up with all the stuff about what not to do in time for the contest that begins in 2029

By that time, I should be able to brain-beam my wondrous item directly in Cyber-SKR Mk 6.0's mind directly without even using a computer

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Pricing, I've noted, doesn't seem as make-or-break unless it is way, way off. My final step is to compare it to similarly-priced wondrous items already in existence and ask myself if it seems to fit within the power level of those items.

Marathon Voter Season 7

But yeah Jeff I read SKR's stuff on not just jumping to the calculation tables before using some common sense, first. I'll get there, this is just a lot to absorb.

I understand. Aside from my final nit-picky rereading and editing, pricing the item seems to be the most time-consuming portion of item creation for me.

I agree with you on that.

If you want to read some YES, I'd recommend reading the comments on past items that made the Top 32 as well as many of the comments in the Critique My Item threads. There's a lot of comments about what people liked, and they're at least as useful as the flood of stuff about what people don't like.

Aww, hey, no one said not to make gloves. This is just a reference so that you know what has come before. The reason that gloves have been so prevalent in the past is because you can do so many awesome things with them.

I in no way discourage gloves (for obvious reasons).

Here's a little stream-of-consciousness review on the Ear-String Gloves of the Sea:

  • It weighs nothing. Other sets of gloves tend to weigh 1 or 2 pounds.
  • Filigree. XD
  • I like both abilities! I somehow imagine the submarine ability as looking like some sort of freaky, fleshy man-o-war.
  • Not sure the abilities really sync besides the whole ear thing.
  • If you insist on having both abilities, I'd put the clauraudience one second (by the way, the line on this ability is well-written).
  • Three times per day as a standard action. The old standby. I think people might be getting tired of reading that, so it might be good to think of a different limitation.
  • How long is the cocoon effect active?
  • How many creatures of what size can fit inside? What if they're hostile? Can the wearer choose which ones are allowed in?
  • How much damage do the tentacle attacks do? (I'd make it unarmed damage, which makes this a good monk item.)
  • Is the wearer proficient with these attacks? (I THINK that they count as natural weapons, so the wearer is automatically proficient? I'd have to check.)
  • What actions can the wearer/occupants use while inside?
  • I fail to see where the "string" part of the item's name comes in. ;)

The string, you see, is what you use to make sure it doesn't fall off when you wear it as a codpiece.

That might be alarming even for a May Queen...

Well, if they're thorny hedgerows that provides protection vs. unwanted goosing.

I call dibs on the bustle of hustle that allows one to store +1 hustle in their bustle.

    Goblin Sewn Ear Gloves
    Aura faint divination; CL 3rd
Slot hands; Price 2,600 gp; Weight 1 lbs.
    Description
These gruesome gloves are formed from severed humanoid ears strung together on a twine of woven horsehair. Once per day when worn and pressed against a solid surface the wearer is able to hear what is occurring on the other side. This only works if there is sound occurring on the other side of the surface and the surface is three feet or less in thickness. Four times a day the wearer of the gloves is able to throw a glob of conjured earwax from the palm of the gloves, two from each of the pair. This ball of wax has the same effect as if the mudball spell had been cast and requires a successful ranged touch attack.

I would vote for those every time I saw them ....despite them being called "Goves" in the item name.

If they were truly goblin glves then the ears would be dog ears wouldnt they? This also has the added benefit of fitting nicely with the audible bonus as dogs have better hearing than most humanoids, goblins hate horses and dogs and the gloves already had some of the hated horse hair in their construction... Just my two cents.

You make a good point, but I just did this for fun and based it off the original Goblin Strand of Ears that I entered the first year of the contest with. The ears are trophies cut of goblin victims and the idea was to make the goblin strand necklace into a glove item with a new power.

I know it was for fun. I just wanted to add to the fun! Although it did give an idea for a cool wondrous item.

If I were really writing it up I would make the switch to dog ears..much cooler. :)
