Some whip questions

Rules Questions

2 people marked this as FAQ candidate.

I have not found official confirmation on a few whip and scorpian whip related questions.

1)Does a character weilding a whip with the Deadly property threaten squares within its reach?

2)Can a scorpian whip threaten and do lethal damage at range (15')? Is there a combination of feats that allows this?

3)Do energy damage properties (such as frost or flaming) applied to a whip deal lethal damage to armored targets? If so, does the whip-weilder threaten?

This is most relevant to a PFS character, so if I have missed offical rulings, I'd apprecaite any help finding them.

Thanks!

I'll answer what I can below.

No, it doesn't say anything about changing the ability to threaten with the weapon so it doesn't have any impact on that.

I've yet to see anything that make Scorpion whips clear so I'd say for now expect table variation.

They will do lethal damage but you still will not threaten.

Your first and third question lead me to believe that you're under the impression that whips not threatening the area they can target is related to them doing non-lethal damage. Aside from both of them being properties of whips they are unrelated properties.

If you want to be able to threaten with a whip the only guaranteed choice is to get the Improved Whip Mastery Feat, although that only allows you to threaten your natural reach + 5 feet.

1. No, a whip seems to not threaten because it's treated as a hybrid of melee and ranged. All this property does is allow it to deal lethal damage.

Whip wrote:

A whip deals no damage to any creature with an armor bonus of +1 or higher or a natural armor bonus of +3 or higher. The whip is treated as a melee weapon with 15-foot reach, though you don't threaten the area into which you can make an attack. In addition, unlike most other weapons with reach, you can use it against foes anywhere within your reach (including adjacent foes).

Using a whip provokes an attack of opportunity, just as if you had used a ranged weapon.

You can use the Weapon Finesse feat to apply your Dexterity modifier instead of your Strength modifier to attack rolls with a whip sized for you, even though it isn't a light weapon.

This whip has a series of razor-sharp blades and fangs inset along its tip. It deals lethal damage, even to creatures with armor bonuses. If you are proficient with whips, you can use a scorpion whip as a whip.

No, it is just a whip that deals lethal damage.

Feats
Whip Mastery
Improved Whip Mastery (this is the one that threatens your reach +5ft = 10ft for most PCs)
Greater Whip Mastery

3. I'm not sure on this one, but I believe it is lethal damage based on the language in the Merciful property that causes all damage to become nonlethal.

The Whip Mastery Feat progression will let you threaten up to 5' plus you natural threatened reach (normally 5') with Improved Whip Mastery (2nd feat in progression).

The Scorpion Whip can deal lethal Damage at 15', but does not threaten at 15'

Irregardless of how much damage the whip can do or the type of damage (Flaming etc), without Improved Whip Mastery ( or a similar ability ), the whip does not threaten.

Do remember that the first feat in the Whip Mastery chain, Whip Mastery, allows you to do lethal damsge with a whip, whether or not it is a scorpion whip, and also do damage to a target no matter how much, or what kind, of armor it has.

Did they ever clarify the weirdness with the scorpion whip's range? Is it 10 feet as a scorpion whip and 15 feet as a whip? I don't have UE readily available at the moment.

The last ruling I read about Scorpion Whip said that either you use it as a scorpion whip (with lethal damage and 10 ft reach), or as a whip (non lethal damage and 15 ft reach).

Bizarre, but consistent. Thanks.
