Best prestige class?

Advice

New homebrew campaign coming up. Wanted to try something a little different.

Usually play a Wizard, thought about going Barbarian and playing BSF for a change of pace.

But something I haven't really done is look at all of the prestige classes with any serious intent. Thought I might base my new character on some prestige class this time around.

I intend to look through many of them, but where should I start?

A lot of Prestige Classes get flak for not being as good as a base class or combination of base classes. I can definitely see this with the likes of Rage Prophet and of course the Mystic Thuerge. Which one actually gets praise from the optimization sharks of the Internet? Is there one?

What do you think is the best overall Prestige class?

Shadow Lodge

I really like the Champion of Irori as a prestige class that can be as powerful as a base class. Check out the guide to it and you will see why a level 7 champion of irori with the right gear can be the best character and killing evil/chaos that you will ever see (I'll give you a hint, INFINITE SMITE EVIL).

A lot of the PrC's that merge 2 classes however, tend to make you a sub-par this AND a sub-par that, as opposed to a good this or that.

I hear Red Mantis Assassin is highly praised.

Guess I should mention that this is an evil campaign, but that Irori does look pretty good, an interesting blend of Paladin and Monk.

It was kind of hard to find it though. How come it's not on the main Pathfinder SRD site?

I've always really liked eldritch knight. It does what it's supposed to. That's all I ask from a PrC.

1 person marked this as FAQ candidate.

I actually love going Lore Master Fighter into Duelist, using a Dueling Sword and everything.

A lot of people I know really have fun with Dragon Disciple.

Grey Guard from 3.5's Complete Scoundrel was probably one of my most favorite PrCs of all time.

I'm playing a Dragon disciple and like it. It basically is a better version of Sorcerer with Dragon bloodline. I play it as a full caster, and don't really have a weapon. This doesn't make full use of the DD bonus but who cares, he's still better than the normal sorcerer.

I know sorcerers get a bad rap online though, but I think its because people play them wrong. We have a wizard in our party, and maybe it how he's played, but I'm way better in a fight, because our GM didn't tell us what were going up against when the wizard is choosing his spells. Its all about spell selection

For barbarians a good prestige class, if there is any is horizon walker. 3 levels in dessert terrain favored and you are immune to fatigue. Rage cycle now.

As for overall, I'm partial to the horizon walker a bit. Currently playing a ranger that will soon go HW for at least 3 levels ASAP then multiclassmout again till later.

The class has very nice flavor, plenty of opportunities for plot hooks or end game goals. Mechanically, if in your favored it can get kind of crazy with what you can do. Either for the bonuses or for the specific terrain abilities, like Dim door from astral plane favored terrain.
