Frustrated and Disheartened, Looking for Battlefield Control

Advice

1 person marked this as a favorite.

I have a Sunderer Barbarian at level 6, she just hit 7, and I find myself bored with merely doing damage and finding creative uses for Sunder against the non-humanoid targets we seem to always be fighting; I'm looking to multi-class as we could use some battlefield control. The party consists of a Blaster Sorceror, 2H Fighter in Medium Armor apparently determined to tank, and a Cleric who switched out to a Gunslinger.

My build is as follows:
Race: Kobold
Racial Traits: Dragonmaw, Dayrider , Wild-Forest Kobold
Traits: Dangerously Curious, Berseker of the Society, Adopted: Elven Reflexes
Class: Armored Hulk Barbarian
Base Stats: Str 15 Dex 18 Con 16 Int 14 Wis 14 Cha 12
Feats/Rage Powers:
Power Attack
Lesser Beast Totem
Rage Power: Reckless Abandon
Superstition
Improved Sunder
Beast Totem

All of the above cannot be changed. My DM is locking me to my choices made after I was forced into this class, which is what's most disheartening and frustrating - this is my first PnP and thus PF game, and he knows that.

Equipment: +1 Adamantine Earthbreaker, 5 Throwing Axes, +2 Stoneplate, +2 Con necklace w/ +2 atk 6 uses/day (DM made this as part of the plot), Belt of Giant's Strength; Very Recent Acquisitions: +2 Int headband, Lesser Belt of Mighty Hurling

I thought an Oracle might be fun despite my 12 CHA. After doing my research into the spell list, mystery options, and Rage Prophet PRC, and even creating prior topics on the matter, not so much anymore.

I'm considering Witch (maybe Hedge Witch?), Wizard (BF control spells, most character-fitting as she was a Magus before the class change), and Alchemist (cognatogen/mutagen, status-inducing bombs, etc.). Swapping out the Stoneplate for a Breastplate and grabbing Arcane Armor Training and later Arcane Armor Mastery would help lower the spell failure chance. I guess I'd consider staying straight Barbarian if it could be made more interesting, but I don't see how. The way my DM plays out enemies, a CAGM build is worthless.

All that said, I just want to find some way to have fun with this. I'm stressed to the point I'm about to quit the group since it's affecting the rest of my life, except they're friends and I do enjoy playing with them apart from this issue. I'd appreciate any help you could give me. Thank you.

Wait, I am not sure if I understand well (not a native english speaker t.t), your DM allows you to change your class, but not your equipment, and stats?
You cant swap them? like move that sweet 18 dex to wis, int or cha? If so then your options expand greatly.

However, I am still puzzled why would a DM allow class change but not feats? whats the logic in that?

I do think though that a witch might be a great addition to your group.
Especially the hedge witch, as she brings healing, save or die spells, int based knowledges and skills, great crowd control (both aoe and single target), buff and debuffs (probably the strongest debuffer in the game) and a respectable selection of top of the line utility, travel and divination spells. And you guys lack all those with your current party setup.

But all that if he allows you to at least freaking swap some stats and replace some useless for a witch feats you got with your barbarian.

Or have a look at the scarred witch doctor archetype (uses constitution instead of int.) I honestly dont know what else to tell you.

Holy crap, I just saw that you were looking to multiclass not to change class.
Sorry, my previous message is irrelevant.

This is my first message ever in this forum and I tried to be nice and I messed it up dammit.

That group you're in sounds like BS.

Now, as for advice: kill this character. Say "I slit my wrists." Or "I drink at the local tavern until I die." If you're not having fun with a character, than don't play him. If you enjoy your friends company and are hesitant to leave, then make a new guy. If the GM doesn't allow that for a first timer... Well, he/she is an idiot and they aren't worth your time.

@tyresias11: Don't worry about. Welcome to the forums.

Basically if you are getting bored with dealing damage and being important to the party in a fight then the DM needs to up the challenge--not exactly just increasing CR, but increasing numbers--.

If you are new then try to avoid using archetypes or most of the base classes, try to stick to core. Choices: You could try 1 rank in Sorcerer, and then follow it up with all Dragon Disciple but only if you want to be draconic.
For maximum smashing things go crossblooded(Draconic/Orc) and take eldritch heritage and take abyssal so you get the most strength bonuses.

If all else fails and you really are not enjoying yourself then pull the LEAVE CARD. Tell your current DM that you are not enjoying yourself, that you want to remake your character as something else to try something new, and that if he doesn't allow this then you'll just leave to play something that makes you feel like your opinions, ambitions, and desires matter.

Do not let it slip into your head that you are playing through HIS story, but instead if it a collaborative effort between you (a character) and your DM (the world, villains, and all that jazz.)

If he refuses to work with you then threaten to leave. An overwhelming number of DMs will pick you making a new character over you leaving the table, and if they do not then they are most likely a@!**&#s who think that you being there is a privilege because it is THEIR story and THEIR game.

Then again your DM might just be new to DMing, or writes very specific modules/stories instead of making it so the adventure could have people fall in and fall out.

He may need to learn that while PLOT is character driven, sub-plots are specific character driven. If he is trying to assert that the quest to beat the crap out of Jerk A%%$%!& the Six hundredth and Sixty-Sixth is something that only your specific character and party is attempting to achieve, and no one else on the planet has it out for this guy then he is doing villains wrong.

I'd appreciate any help you could give me. Thank you.

Your problem here is that your party consists of

DAMAGE (you)
DAMAGE (Blaster Sorcerer)
DAMAGE (2H Fighter)
DAMAGE (Gunslinger)
and therefore everything is going to flat-out die before it has a chance to threaten you in any major way.

This is an optimal way to build a party IMO, so the reason he isn't allowing you to chance to a different class is because you'll then be bored with being useless.

He needs to send enemies that threaten the party's weak-spots--Willpower is the most likely hard to resist save of the party.

Try this exercise: Change the barbarian's personality in some way, make him/her obsessed with something or some ideal, and then, through sheer force of character, make that thing happen. Recall a villain who escaped, and charge forward recklessly to hunt him down and kill him. Speak of grand, high, and epic endeavors that you seek to make happen in the world.

Basically force your character to be something that pushes the world in a major direction, and forces the story in a direction. If he wont let you make a new character, then you can force him to contend with your current character having side-goals.
