Storing your body

When using spells such as magic jar or astral projection, what is a good way to keep your helpless body close by, but safe?

I'm looking for a few clever brainstormers. Please don't disappoint.

Tie to the saddle on the druid's large animal companion.

Scarab Sages

Flesh to stone. I don't know if that would actually work or if it would cancel the other spell.
If it does work, bury your body--make sure you have a way to use earth glide when you come back (or stilled, silenced teleport) so you don't suffocate.

Have you considered imprisonment?

And once magic jar ends how exactly do I avoid dying?

You don't die. You have contingencies in place to cast freedom on you.

Fine for astral projection, since that's sustainable long term. Magic jar, not so much.

You can't contingency a 9th-level spell.

A celebrity witch, you know a witch of the stars, could use Ice Tomb on the body and then maybe a Handy Haversak or Bag of Holding... I say maybe because in theory you are placing the body in a different dimension which would clearly violate the range one can be from the body. But I'm sure there are ways of shrinking objects etc.

Maybe a halfling witch with a greater hat of disguised altered to tiny, then carried by whom ever, sweeten the deal by using Ice Tomb and being placed in a whineskin so the fighter has a perpetually chilled drink while carring the body.

Wear armor or heavy robes and get an ally to animate it? You'll be walking around while your mind is roaming ;)

I've used skinsend as a solution to the problem.
So you walk around in your skin before magic jar'ing someone. Then you pack up your skin in a bag or sack, and carry it with you (or have someone else carry it.

If the spell ends you return to your skin, free to flee or continue. If the skin is destroyed, you better flee to your actual body before the spell ends.

It is debateable, whether or not your skin counts as your body in regard to these spells, however. Some might disagree.

If your soulless body counts as object you simply use Shrink Object and put it in someone's pocket. Once you return to the body you are no longer a valid target and regain the original size.

If your body counts as living creature use Baleful Polymorph. You can turn your body into a parrot and put it into a cage. And then you assure people that the parrot is not actually dead but "sleeping" ;)
Transforming back would be more difficult. However if you have both still spell and silent spell you could still cast Break Enchantment.

Nothing beats a qualified guard. For astral projection the best guard is secrecy. Privacy spells are the key t here.

Remember with magic jar, you're operating under at least two severe constraints.

1. You have to remain on the same plane as however you're operating

2. You want to make damm sure you're within spell range when the duration runs out, or if you're expelled from the body.

First thing that I thought of...

I meant contingency in the conventional meaning of the term, not the spell. Have plans in place for bound entities or faithful allies (if you can trust them) to do it.

Hire a few pallbearers and professional mourners, and just have them parade your body around in a procession.

It might cause a bit of a stir when you return to your "corpse" though...

Weekend at Bernie's?

Casting Skinsend before Magic Jar is an interesting option too. Once you "jar" out of your "skin", it can be folded up and put in a bag. Your skinless body could be kept safe miles away, or even on another plane - Skinsend doesn't have the same restrictions as Magic Jar when it comes to returning to your body.

If your GM allows your conciousness to return to your original body when the Skinsend spell ends, regardless of any Magic Jarring that may have occured afterwards, you can:

  • Be rescued by an ally by simply healing your body.
  • Put some regeneration on your body that heals you fully before the Magic Jar ends - you'd be yanked back into your own body whether or not you're within range for the Magic Jar spell to end safely.
