I was reading this in the core rulebook...
Upon reaching 4th level, and at every even-numbered sorcerer level after that (6th, 8th, and so on), a sorcerer can choose to learn a new spell in place of one she already knows. In effect, the sorcerer loses the old spell in exchange for the new one. The new spell's level must be the same as that of the spell being exchanged. A sorcerer may swap only a single spell at any given level, and must choose whether or not to swap the spell at the same time that she gains new spells known for the level.
...and was trying to understand: does that mean at the 4th level a Sorcerer can switch out a spell they previously learned and pick 1 new spell as well (essentially now knowing how to do 2 new things rather than just one, even though one is just a swap-out)?

Your set of known spells at level 3 is:
5 cantrips3 Level 1 spells, plus your bloodline level 1 spell.
Your set of known spells at level 4 is:
6 cantrips
3 level 1 spells, plus your bloodline level 1 spell
1 level 2 spell.
So, upon leveling up to 4th, you get to choose two shiny new spells:
1 cantrip
1 level 2 spell.
In addition, you can exchange one of your spells known (except for your bloodline spell) for any other one Sorcerer spell of the same level. You don't have to, though.

Yes, Shivian, you can learn two new things at level 4, your new 2nd level spell and a new spell that you swap out of a lower level - but don't forget that you also UN-learn one old thing, so the net benefit is just one more spell than you used to have.
This lets you get rid of bad choices and replace them with better choices. Or it lets you choose a good low-level spell like Sleep which is really only useful in the first few levels of your character's career, then swap that out for a more useful spell later in his career.

under the swap out rules, can the sorcerer store this option for use later or can he only do so at the designated levels (4, 6, 8, etc)? Ex: at 8th level, he swap out 3 spells if he did take the option at 4th & 6th level?
Only at the designated levels. If you do not choose to swap it at the time you level you lose the option.
