Metamagic Rods

Liberty's Edge

If you want to use a metamagic rod in combat, you need one hand to hold it and one free hand to cast the spell. How can a cleric use a rod in combat without dropping his weapon (and shield) first?

A metamagic rod can function as a light mace or club. Does a metamagic rod bypass DR/magic ? Can you cast (greater) magic weapon on a metamagic rod or create a metamagic rod +1?

You use a light shield and not a heavy shield.

1. If the rod can be used as a weapon, you can use the rod and a light shield or buckler. Otherwise, you'd have to drop the weapon.

2. The description for rods in the CRB says that SOME of the rods, as noted in their description, can be used as light maces or clubs. Metamagic rods do not have that line in their description, so they cannot be used as weapons.

My cleric doesn't use a weapon, but he carries a metamagic rod in his hand, on the same arm as his buckler. You could also look into using a weapon cord so you can drop your weapon without losing it.

Use a light shield and no weapon.

You can use the rod as a light mace.
It doesn't bypass DR of course.
Yes you can Magic Weapon it and then would cut thru DR/magic.

Beware of Ashram's comment. He may be right. And a GM may reject using a Metamagic Rod as a weapon.
