I've been looking into making a mounted fury barbarian, so that I can go into mammoth rider at later levels, and I've been wondering about something. The barbarian beast totem rage power gives him 2 claw attacks and pounce, and the greater ferocious mount allows the mount to share in the barbarian's continuous rage powers. Would the mount get the extra claw attacks if it were something like a wolf? I know the mounted fury archetype doesn't allow wolves as a choice, but I was planned on replacing the one I do have with a wolf when I get to mammoth rider.
Sorry for the wall of text, first post. Hopefully I'll get better through time, eh.

As long as it has the limbs it gets the attack. I can't think of snything that can be ridden that doesn't have the needed limbs.
For reference there's an npc that raids the world wound I think... barb 10 mammoth rider 10? Anyhow one of the main demons had to flee because his mammoth mount would have killed the demon.
While raging it likely has gore slam clawx2 +bite pounce.
Though I'm not sure it can slam and claw at the same time I am not sure it matters :P

Well, while not specifically in the rules, I would think that fingers/toes would generally be necessary if you wanted a claw attack. I suppose an insect like creature could get by with a large, sharp leg (mantis for example), but otherwise you would need more parts. So horse no, wolf maybe.
My question is this though: do you want a wolf with claws? This might sound silly, since more natural attacks usually = more damage. But with the wolf as an animal companion, it actually gets two advantages that come the fact that it only has a single weapon. The first is the general rule that a single natural attack is always primary and deals 1.5xSTR and power attack damage. Secondly, the multiattack ability for animal companions at level 10 (relevant, since you can't even get the wolf until level 10 anyway when using beast rider) not only grants the multiattack feat, but it also has a line for animals with 1-2 natural attacks. This rule basically gives your AC an iterative (BAB-5) attack with its natural weapon.
So, doing the math, your wolf gets 1.5x bonus damage over 2 attacks, which is fairly similar to 1x over 3 attacks. Also take in the fact that mammoth rider allows a huge mount, which means greater reach and better chances at AoO when enemies move (its threatened area is a circle 35 feet across..I think...always fuzzy with the reach of larger nonhuman-like creatures). So the 1.5x of the single bite might be better in the long run, especially with the massive bonuses to strength the gigantic steed receives. So do you really want to press the issue of it gaining claws?

If it gets pounce, it's definitely worth it. And remember with that 1.5 over 2 attacks, the second attack will be at -5, which tips the scales heavily in the favor of having 3 attacks. Losing a few points of damage on attacks of opportunity is well worth almost tripling your damage on a charge and full attack.
Besides, if the barbarian and the mount can both rage and pounce, anything short of boss monster will likely be vaporized in one hit.

I can somewhat understand that, but still, the animal companion would have a strength of 30 while raging, given the size adjustments to strength, full effective druid level on stat bonuses, and rage. Since quadrupeds have belt slots or can benefit from spells, this can go even further. So even if it is an iterative attack, it seems more likely to hit than a rogue's attack. And that is a nice bit of damage it can get off with an AoO.
I am simply giving this as options. If he was only concerned about just the pounce and multiple natural attacks, then a tiger or lion would be a better choice anyway. They have similar base strength to the wolf, get pounce without rage powers, and technically have 5 attacks since rake abilities can be used during pounce.

Thanks for the responses everyone. From what I can gather,it'd be a better idea to take the big cat, and take different rage powers. Was thinking maybe elemental rage, to give barbarian and mount extra damage. On a side note, is it possible for the mount and rider to both make full attacks in a round, or is there a rule or something preventing that?
