Give a card

Rules Questions and Gameplay Discussion

During the Give a Card step can the receiving character put that card in their character deck?

Liberty's Edge

The receiving character puts the card in their hand. To play as the wish.

Now, after the scenario is over, all the PCs may rebuild their character decks based on the rules in the book. At that point, everyone can share cards if they want. I'm assuming they want because this is a cooperative game and everyone should be helping each other out. If there are problems with sharing...then that is something you will have to deal with on your own. Nothing really in the rules about that.

Yeah that's what I figured. I had a character that didn't have anymore cards to draw so I wanted to add cards to add to his health but if you put them in his hand he still has to discard down to his legal hand size. Thanks for the fast reply.

Silver Crusade

While I kind of assumed the card goes in the receiving player's hand, it doesn't actually say that in the rulebook. An official confirmation would probably be a good thing.

I'm pretty sure it's given to hand, but I hadn't noticed that the rules aren't explicit. The recipient won't have to discard down to their hand size until the end of their turn, though.

It goes into their hand.

A fair few cards have a recharge ability though, so you can give some minor healing by handing stuff off, or if you know something's coming up you can offer a card now in exchange for a Blessing later, so they suffer no net loss.

Oh I like that, hand a card over with a recharge and it could wind up in the draw pile if other characters give some cards also. I like that a lot.

Do you keep the cards that you acquire in a scenario even if the group fails because the Blessings' Deck has run out?

Yes.

Here is the rulebook reference for that:

Once you’ve played a scenario, whether you won or lost, rebuild your character deck (see Between Games, below). Put all other cards back into the box.

Between Games
After each scenario, you must rebuild your character deck. Start by combining your discard pile with your hand, your character deck, and any cards you buried under your character card; you may then freely trade cards with other players.

So even if you lost you follow the Between Games instructions which have use you hand, discard pile, and buried pile to rebuild your deck. That will by default include cards you acquired.

You aren't technically ever required to remember what was in your deck when you started the scenario. The character sheets are nice and all, but they aren't required to play.

In my dozen or so games so far, nobody has yet to give a card to another player during the game. Between games, everyone counts up the cards they have to get back to their correct deck composition. Anything that they can't use or don't want gets tossed to the center of the table and is up for grabs.

The only issue we've had so far with that was when one character wound up banishing several cards during a scenario. After the game, he was able to replace some of the cards with those up for grabs in the center. Whatever he couldn't replace from the pool, he picked from the box making sure it had the Basic trait. The problem was: He lost a couple good weapons, and the weapons up for grab weren't as good. He wanted to get some out of the box, but because there were some available, I said no. Did I do it correctly, or was I just too harsh?

You played it right. If there are enough cards to rebuild the decks, you have to use them, even if they are not optimal. It's only when there aren't enough that you're allowed to get Basics from the box

Here is the rulebook for that:

Between Games...If you can’t construct a valid deck from the cards your group has available because you don’t have enough of certain card types, choose the extra cards you need from the box, choosing only cards with the Basic trait. After you begin the adventure The Hook Mountain Massacre, you may ignore the Basic trait restriction; instead, you may use any cards in the box from the base set and the Character Add-On Deck, as well as any cards from an adventure whose adventure deck number is at least 2 lower than the adventure you’re currently playing.
