Do Barriers Deal Damage

Pathfinder Adventure Card Game General Discussion

I know barriers are considered a bane and you have to make a check to defeat it, but when you encounter them, is it considered combat or non-combat, as why would you be in combat with a Battered Chest or a Mystic Inscription? I know some barriers like Collapsing Ceiling say to take 2d4 damage if you fail the check, but would you take the 2d4 damage along with the difference you missed the check by?

Let's say you encounter the Battered Chest, which doesn't mention taking damage, and requires a Dex 10 or Str 8 check, you decide to go for Str and roll a 6, do you take 2 points of damage for not defeating it? To me that wouldn't make much sense, but maybe that is the case, I just don't know. Maybe you could say it has a trap on it that you triggered or something, but I'm still not sold on that idea.

I don't think you take damage, not defeating a barrier usually has some other effect on you. Also you aren't making combat checks against barriers.

The check to defeat Barriers are typically not Combat checks, hence you do not the difference in damage.

As you pointed out, it makes no sense to combat a chest. Basically you either open it or you don't. You can even decide whether to keep it around if you fail, hence the part about optionally banishing it.

I view the chest type barrier as hidden boons. As for your last point, there is in fact a trapped chest, the one that gives you an armour card but I believe it is the only one.

No, I don't think Barriers are meant to be that punishing. Two sets of damage is overkill.

In your example, the maximum damage would be if you had rolled a 1. That's maximum of 15 damage. That almost twice as much as the biggest hand is Ezren's 8 (via Power Feats). So anything above an 8 is a waste of damage.

2d4 as it is is pretty hurtful as it is. Valeros is almost guaranteed to lose half his hand.

Barriers are banes that make you waste your time and resources. Although they can sometimes reward you with boons.

This clearly needs to be added to the FAQ, but "Combat" is *not* synonymous with "check to defeat a monster."

First, it's only a Combat check when the check actually says "Combat" above the circle.

Next, the only thing that causes damage on a failed check is when that check is to defeat a monster—and that damage happens whether it's a Combat check or not.

Finally, damage only counts as Combat damage when you're failing a Combat check against a monster, or if the card otherwise tells you it deals Combat damage.

So, checks to defeat a Battered Chest, Mystic Inscription, or Collapsed Ceiling are not Combat checks, because they don't say "Combat" in the "Check to Defeat" section.

They don't deal damage based on subtracting your roll from the number in the circle, because they are not Monsters.

Collapsed Ceiling *does* deal Combat damage, because it actually says so on the card (but nothing about that makes it a Combat check).

Just to clarify, this means that something like a Siren, which has a check to defeat of Wisdom 8 if I'm not mistaken and not a combat check does damage because it's a monster and has nothing to do with the Combat trait that it is lacking?

Wow. That's definitly a big change to the way I have been playing. Thanks for the follow up. I have only been giving combat damage when I am specifically doing a combat check, if it's a check to defeat (like siren) I usually just did the bad stuff if I failed, i didn't take additional damage. Good to know. t

Wow this really helps explains things in very clear terms. Especially for cards like Siren and the Spectre. Thanks!

Correct:

Might want to consider including this in the FAQ. It's a pretty important clarification imo. Especially for people making their own home brew cards.
