Downtime Rules & Adding Spells to your Spellbook

Rules Questions

In the downtime rules I'm reading, it says:

Add Spells to Your Spellbook

If you're a magus or wizard, you can spend 1 day of downtime to copy up to eight spells from other sources into your spellbook (see Spells Copied from Another's Spellbook or a Scroll). If you're an alchemist, you can use this option to add new formulae to your formula book. If you're a witch, you can use this option to add spells to your familiar. You may spend Magic toward the cost of copying spells.

Now, this raises a few questions for me.

1) - Does this mean I can automatically copy spells that I can afford without searching out the sources (i.e. other wizards / magi)?

2) - Does this also mean that I can specifically choose what spells I'd like to add to my spellbook instead of having the luck of the draw? (as long as I can afford it and have proper time).

3) - [This one I doubt] - Can earned capitol in the form of Magic be spent towards the cost of copying spells during downtime?

Small Bump

My guess is it uses the standard rules checks to add spells.

I can't answer the second bit.

For the first part, it specifically calls out the need for other sources. You could talk to your DM about it, but at my table you have to have a source. Captured spellbook, scroll ... I could even seeing getting creative studying an item or creature and learning a spell that way, but you still need a source. Unless your group just wants to hand wave it.

And yes, you should be able to choose ... within what's available. Don't think of it as an either or, there's a middle ground, or at least, that's how I rule it.

I have no idea about the last bit either.

That makes sense. So everything pretty much as normal then. I was asking because it almost seemed like it was implying that you for sure will have sources and might even be able to search out a specific spell if one wished. That being said, I can definitely see why that wouldn't be the case and will continue looking for sources in our game.

Thanks everyone.

Is this PFS? If so, you can buy level 0 and level 1 scrolls as Always
Available. Check with your GM for specific spells of higher level if a
NPC might have them, which will cost the NPC charge plus the scribing
cost. If you have another Player Wizard in a session, then get with him/her and the GM at the end of the session to trade spells. Otherwise, you can buy scrolls of spells of spell level 2 to 6 as
you can afford them and based on your Fame rating. You can take 10 on
the Spellcraft check between adventures to scribe the scroll, since you have Read Magic automatically understands it, and then
pay the scribing fee. I know my level 6 Wizard has the spellcraft to auto
succeed on spells to level 8 that way.

Also note that this is most likely a typo and should read "eight levels worth of spells per day" instead of "eight spells per day". Check with your GM.

Question 3 - the answer is yes. It's in the Down Time Activities chapter, right at the beginning under "Adding Spells to your Spellbook". If I wasn't doing this from my phone I would quote or link to it.
