Large(or bigger) using withdraw.

Rules Questions

The withdraw rules says that whichever square you occupy is not threatened when you withdraw. If your a large creature you occupy more then 1 square. A player at the table who has as much knowledge of the system as I do says that only the first squares I leave are not threatened, I say all 4 of them are. This came up in a game recently and I can't find errata or precedence anywhere. So, rules lawyers, can I get an answer?

The rules say "the square you start in" and are obviously not written with larger creatures in mind, which RAW leaves room for both presented interpretations. I'd have to agree with your player though, even if you acknowledge that the larger creatures squares all count as such non-threatened squares they should only do so for the part of the creature that originally occupies them.

For me the size of the creature or creatures involved doesn't matter. In order to attack a creature in melee you must threaten a square it is in. You don't have to threaten all the squares it's in to attack. Likewise you don't need to threaten more than a single square to attack it after it starts to withdraw. If after the creature moves one square you still threaten any square it occupies you qualify for an AoO should it continue to move/withdraw.

If you only get 1 or 2 squares of 'non-threatened', large creatures with reach can't withdraw from each other, ever.

Kwauss, of course they can, if they have reach and want to be able to withdraw they better keep their distance instead of moving to adjacent squares. And I think I saw abilities somewhere that allow for more squares to count as non-threatened during a withdraw action (but I don't remember the source).
