What books do I need?

Pathfinder Society

As a play what books do i need to start playing PFS?

Welcome to PFS!!!

In order to start playing PFS, the only two books you would need are:

Guide to Pathfinder Society Organized Play - Found here on this site
Pathfinder Core Rule Book (CRB)

Those two books are what is referred to as the core assumption.

In addition, I would grab the Additional Resources for any other material that you may want to use in the future from other sources and to cover the traits in the Pathfinder Character Traits Web Enhancement (can be downloaded from the Additional Resources page).

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask.

HERE is the link to the Additional Resources page. If you are using anything from outside the Core Rulebook, you'll need those books as well.

Lantern Lodge 4/5

If by chance you started out with the Pathfinder RPG Beginner Box, you could try out Pathfinder Society using a character built using the Hero's Handbook and the Pathfinder Society Character Creation Guide (free download). The classes, races, feats, equipment, spells etc, in the Beginner Box are simply a smaller selection of those you'll find in the Core Rulebook anyway, so you can build a perfectly legal PFS character using Beginner Box rules, as long as you make the adjustments mentioned in the Guide, such as 20 point buy (instead of 15) etc. You can always upgrade to the Core Rulebook when you're ready. Either way, you'll still need the Guide to Pathfinder Society Organised Play (free download).

Grand Lodge 4/5

Note: If you are running a character who will be casting either Summon Monster or Summon Nature's Ally, you should get the Bestiary for the summoned creatures' stats.

What is the Hero's Handbook? When I look on Paizo.com there seem to be a number of them, but they are class-specific? Is there a primary one that is not?

Dark Archive 2/5

Are you referring to this type of Hero's Handbook?

If so, those books were written D&D 4th edition. Such books are not legal in PFS nor compatible with the Pathfinder game system.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

To start you just need to show up. Dice would help. You should eventually get the core rulebook, but you don't need to buy it to try it.

It's part of the Beginner Box.
