Int 1 Character

Rules Questions

A barbarian in a game that I'm running has a 7 INT score and got hit by Bestow Curse, bringing his INT to 1.

Now, I know that he doesn't fall comatose until his INT reaches 0. But are there any mechanical penalties imposed on a character with an INT of 1? For instance animal companions can't use feats except for the ones on the animal feat list until their int is 3 or higher. Does that apply to players? Are there any other mechanical penalties imposed on the character besides a -5 to knowledge checks?

Not per the rules, but logically it should.

Yes. You can no longer read, write or speak:

"Any creature capable of understanding speech has a score of at least 3."
"If you have a penalty, you can still read and speak your racial languages unless your Intelligence is lower than 3."

The Exchange

Generally, no. The rules don't specifically exempt the use of any feats except those (such as Combat Expertise) that have an Intelligence prerequisite.

However, you may want to describe things to the Int-1 character differently than you do to the rest. Describe them as an infant would see them (although, to be honest, I'd put even an infant at Int 2.)

"The shiny thing is mad! Now you are sad."

Liberty's Edge

If you look a the Feeble-mind spell it mentions Int 1 creatures, they can know a friend but not much else. I would treat the like an animal but that is not official.
