Fatigued Stalwart Defender Hit by Waves of Fatigue

Rules Questions

In my last game we had a character who's a stalwart defender who had just come out of his defensive stance, so he was fatigued. The next round an enemy wizard appeared and cast Waves of Fatigue on the party. The spell says that characters who are already fatigued are unaffected. However, given that the stalwart defender's fatigue only lasts a few rounds, but the fatigue from Waves of Fatigue lasts until the target rests for 8 hours, it doesn't seem right to let him be immune to the spell. Thoughts?

Well there are ways for fatigued characters to recover from fatigue without having to get 8 hours of rest. However, a tight reading of RAW does imply that the stalwart defender is in fact immune to the spell because he was fatigued at the time of casting.

Common sense would seem to argue that he should be fatigued until he has 8 hours rest or some other magic removes the fatigued condition. However, this is not RAW or supported by any rules and would be house rule territory.

Thanks for your comments. Sounds like we're thinking along the same lines. I think I'll have to house rule this one and give my player some bad news... :)

I will go ahead and say that I believe they added the line about a fatigued character being unaffected because normally a character that is fatigued and does something that would cause fatigue again instead becomes exhausted. So they specifically designed the spell so that you couldn't cause someone to be exhausted with it, whether because they were already fatigued from doing something or because you cast the spell twice. The exhuasted condition is pretty brutal, and I think it was done simply to avoid that possibility.

I would have the effect restart the timer for the removing of the fatigue.

You are fatigued and have rested 7 hours and now you are hit by a Waves of Fatigue spell? You need 8 full hours to recover.

That isn't really the problem.

The stalwart defenders Defensive Stance works like the Barbarian's Rage, in that it causes fatigue when it ends for a number of rounds equal to twice the number spent in the stance.

I know, But I don't think the solution should be limited to one or two classes only.

If being fatigued don't protect you, it shouldn't protect anyone.
My way the effect essentially overlap without stacking.

True, and I believe it is the most sensible way to actually run the spell. Though this method isn't RAW by any means.
