Evil Bardic Fluff Quotes / Passages

Pathfinder First Edition General Discussion

This weekend I will be starting a new campaign as a Neutral Evil Bard. I'd like some quotes or passages that help convey a sense of dread, despair, unease, lack of hope, etc. that I can use as I announce my bardic performances.

Feel free to make it up if you so feel, I just want a little extra fluff to set the mood for my party of evil-doers as we begin our conquest. A sentence or two would be just fine or a short stanza. I doubt my DM will be terribly happy if I go on a 5 minute soliloquy when performing Inspire Courage however.

If your words match another of the Bard's performances, please mention which one/s. She will be a straight up Bard, so none of the archetypal performances will be used.

Thanks in advance for anything you'd like to contribute!

Here's a few to kick things off:

"He walked out in the gray light and stood and he saw for a brief moment the absolute truth of the world. The cold relentless circling of the intestate earth. Darkness implacable. The blind dogs of the sun in their running. The crushing black vacuum of the universe. And somewhere two hunted animals trembling like ground-foxes in their cover. Borrowed time and borrowed world and borrowed eyes with which to sorrow it."

"So when the last and dreadful hour
This crumbling pageant shall devour,
The trumpet shall be heard on high,
The dead shall live, the living die,
And Music shall untune the sky."

"And starward drifts the stricken world,
Lone in unalterable gloom
Dead, with a universe for tomb,
Dark, and to vaster darkness whirled."

"In her mind's eye she saw it, saw it all at last: the rolling armies and the flames of battle; the graves and pits and dying cries of a hundred million souls; the spreading darkness, like a black wing stretching over the earth; the last, bitter hours of cruelty and sorrow, and the terrible, final flights; death's great dominion over all, and, at the last, empty cities, becalmed by the silence of a hundred years. Already these things were coming to pass."

Edgar. Allen. Poe.

Practically anything by Poe. Or A. E. Houseman (prety much anything) To an Athlete Dying Young, or even some William Blake (A Poison Tree) comes to mind.

There's no end to dark, depressing poesy. Really. No. End. Ever ...

I agree, just buy a copy of the complete works of Edgar Allen Poe.

You might also pick lyricists such as Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, AC/DC, Slayer, and other such people. Grabbing some punk rock adds some anarchy as well.

Get a recording of ominous sounding chanting in a language you don't understand. Use that as your performance.

Scribbling furiously, stop, pause, look up and ask "what rhymes with 'Hastor'?"

You cannot go wrong with O Fortuna. But save it for the big battles.

I ran a dirge bard that understood the relationship between emotions and sound. By simply chiming a bell, he was able to use Haunting Refrain/Versatile Preformance to make intimidate checks. This bard didn't use words to intimidate people as much as he used tones. You could say almost anything at the right tone to make it come across as imposing or just plain creepy.

Something to think about, at least.

Sorry to be a little irreverant of the original topic, but InsaneFox makes me think that there needs to be a Bardic Spell called Brown Note. Make it scale according to level and resemble Spider Jerusalem's favourite weapon in effect...

"Life...is a tale, told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing" - Shakespeare (Macbeth)

"Fair is foul, and foul is fair, hover through the fog and filthy air" - Shakespeare (Macbeth)

You can find a lot of good quotes in almost any Shakespeare sonnet or dramatic play. King Lear specifically might be of use to you. If you have time to read his sonnets too, they are usually pretty gloomy.

Google "emo depressed quotes" and you will have them strangling kittens in no time. Tons of shorties but goodies.

"If you could read my mind, you'd be in tears"
Hilarious, I'm totally stealing the emo-bard for my next character, Thanks!

Sounds like Marvin the paranoid android

"You don't know were I've been!" "Disease is the revenge of the weak againist the strong." "Death is not release, merely transition to a new pain." "Life is pain, Death is permanent, choose well." "Happiness is an illusion of the foolish. Misery is the vessel of the wise." "Drink deeply; never question the contents." "I have seen your soul it weeps black ichor."

For fun.
"Roses are red, Corpses are blue, guard me well and I may heal you...maybe."
