Helping a player create a character

Advice

So a player of mine wants to make Ash from Evil Dead/Army of Darkness.

I'm a big fan of those movies so I'm totally on board.
But thats a fairly rough concept to bring to play.

Should he start as a Gunslinger (Musket arch)? Or Fighter with a dip or feats for Gunslinger?

My initial thought was Fighter with GS feats. But then he pointed out he was looking at the Musket arch, and planned to be mostly ranged. Which if thats how he intends to play works for me.

The other issue is the cut off hand. He's good with not getting a chainsaw, for obvious reasons. So we've been looking at a locking gauntlet with a longsword. Any other suggestions that may work better?

Any build advice would be a super big help!

This is a tough call.

For starters, muskets are two-handed weapons. Firing with one hand will be a problem. Arguably, he could brace the barrel on his stumpy hand - I would allow that - but we still have the problem that it takes two hands to reload. Who will hold his musket for him while he reloads? Or who will reload the musket while he holds it?

As for the stumpy arm, your locked-gauntlet idea works well - assume it is a (crappy and almost useless) mechanical hand that works exactly like a locked gauntlet: it can hold any one-handed melee weapon, the weapon cannot be dropped or disarmed, the hand cannot be used to do anything else, etc.

No way. Go with it even more. Have the character have some Gnome Alchemist as a contact who can make him sweet new hand replacements that do different things that can bolt on and bolt off. Pistol hand, sword hand, alchemical clockwork hand, etc.

For the two hands problem: Just say he puts the butt on the ground and reloads it like a normal person, or has it on a sling or something that allows him to do it. Or he has again a gnome alchemist Fast Reload Hand (tm) or something. Not only does he get his character doing cool things, there is an NPC there that has immediate tie in and worth to the player character.

We agreed on the braceing with the stumpy hand as well. The reloading is a major issue we're trying to figure out as well (and another point we need advice or suggestions on).

Yeah that's been my plan for the locked-auntlet. Dont really see many more options thematically.

@Steve that is an excellent idea!! I really really like that!

Duh, summoner ofcourse! Though pikachu would be tough to make as an eidolon at low levels.

What?

So Musket arch Gunslinger seems to be the way to go.
With a locking gauntlet (and a gnome contact to work with it).

If he reloads with a sling or butt on the ground it's going to take a lot longer than with two hands. And switching hands mid combat is going to be a pita.

Perhaps just allow him a multi-shot weapon like the double barreled musket... so he can take a couple of shots with his Boomstick, then jump into melee.

As for the hand, use a scizore with a serrated edge... maybe a thundering effect =)

Though I think the idea of 'attachments' he can screw on and off as needed would be fun, if not entirely Ash-like. Perhaps to allow for different weapon damage types, or DR by-passers, or just plain utility (thieves tools, grappling hook launchers, god forbid a flamethrower...)

Necktie? Nickel? I know it was an N-word....

Was definitely going to give him at least a double barrel. He'd basically be melee with just a single.

I like the scizore, that could easily be worked into an attachment.
The attachments idea was a great one.

I also need to look at which feats to use.
