Kingmaker AP what class

Advice

So in like a week or two I'll be in a Kingmaker AP i think we may have 6 players (yeah I know big group) so far I know one person is a bard he will be doing buffing and all that fun stuff he's using a whip or trip and disarm and a bow as support damage, another player is a paladin(not much info on him) another is a necromancer , the last two not a clue. So i'm deeply torn between a zen archer or a sorcerer blaster, I'm looking to do damage and tons of it. Doing a 20 point buy, what one should I do and anyone have a few complete builds?

Bardic backing dramatically improves builds with many attacks at normally dubious accuracy. To that end I'd look at a pouncing natural weapon Druid or Synth Summoner or a Sohei stacking flurry with rapid and many shot.

I wouldn't do the sorcerer if you want to deal damage. It's harder to make them deal damage, uses up limited spells, and you won't get the single target damage of an archer or pouncer anyways.

I think your party might do well with a druid with a big cat animal companion. Those suckers can do alot of damage eventually, and kingmaker really screams to have SOMEONE in the party with wilderness abilities, and that pretty much means either ranger or druid. If you want to do lots of damage, druid is probably the better choice in the long run.

Just a note on the Sohei thing, if you decide to do that instead of Zen Archer. While RAW, you can Manyshot and Rapidshot as a Sohei, and not as a Zen Archer, it may not be RAI. If you go Sohei, it may be best to clarify with your GM prior to taking the feats if you'll be able to Rapid/Many while flurrying.

Silver Crusade

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Kolokotroni's and Atarlost's suggestion would be better for a smaller party. As it is, combat at level 1 will probably take quite a while to complete 1 turn.

I like the Idea of both the Zen Archer and the Sorcerer. Why not do both? Make them an Arcane Archer. Not sure how optimized it would be, but you would get to do both archery and spell casting. Arrows that explode into fireballs? Sign me up.

Instead of Zen Archer you might consider Ranger. That would give you the benefit of archery, bonuses to Survival so you could act as a guide, and full BAB. If no one takes a trapfinding class, you could do that too with the Trapper/Urban Archetype.

Combine that all together: Trapper Ranger + Sorcerer(pick your bloodline) -> Arcane Archer. Your arrows are all enchanted. You can attach either traps OR Spells to your arrows. You can find and disable traps. Favored Enemies, Favored Terrains, Tracking, Bond (probably better w/companions). Seems like a cool idea to me.

For damage and that AP I adored my character and so did my party. Fighter 1/Wizard 5/Eldritch Knight 10/Arcane Archer 4. I shot a bow, I had utility magic, and crafting. All time favorite combo was launching antimagic fields at enemy casters. Months upon months of downtime. Oh my you want to make items in Kingmaker.

But 17 BA and 9th spells at 20 ain't to shabby. With some minor to major alterations done by GM we did goto 20, most end closer to 16ish from what I hear.

Depending on whether your group uses downtime rules from Ultimate campaign is a HUGE question. I think we had somewhere around 5 years of downtime in that AP FYI.

I have only played one game session of Kingmaker so take my advice with a grain of salt.

From what I understand, most fights are based on where the party goes and that usually you have one or at most two fights a day. This lends itself to be really good for classes that have alot of burst damage but cant sustain it. So classes like the Hybrids with limited use abilities(Alchemist,Magus,Summoner, ect) and Casters (Wizards, Witches,Sorcerors, ect) really shine. They can blow all their abilities without having to worry about later fights. Also its a land with alot of wilderness. If you want to play an archer you might consider Ranger. They have the pet animal and all the nice skills for tracking and survival in the wilderness.

Also note that at some point you start to lead armies and its based off your characters stats who makes for the better "King". If someone in the party wants to be THE guy you might want to ask the DM what they need to do. I personally haven't experienced either the Kindom making side or the mass combat rules so someone else will have to comment on that.

So I would suggest Ranger, Caster, or one of the Hybrids.

I've been GMing Kingmaker for nearly 2 years now and I just started my second playthrough with a second group.

To date the best character I have see for this with VERY consisten damage is a Sohei Monk, took leadership at 7th lvl to get a synthesist summoner companion (His spellcasting horse). He multiclassed to fighter at 12 lvl.

He is a beast! easily 150dmg per round and I can count on 2 hands the number of times the enemies can even reach him to attack.

I do not have a full build, but you may want to look into it :)

The Sohei has to wait till 6th level before they can Flurry with a bow. As well they trade a lot for this ability. I don't see any reason why this wouldn't be intended.

anyone have a build for the Sohei, also want to say thanks to everyone

For just being a beast dealing damage-- Zen Archers are amazing. My first VTT Pathfinder character was a Zen Archer, and she rocked.

If you wanna throw in a little sorcery and arcane archery for fun, go with empyreal sorcerer. Its based off your Wisdom.

So for non-stop damage, Zen-Archers are great.

That said, Kingmaker is a BIG sandbox roleplaying venue.

Lots of ways to tie your characters backstory into whats happening in the world, and mold it to suit your motivations.

There is a ton of outdoor exploration. Skills that help that are primo.

There are also a number of leadership roles for the PCs to take in running the kingdom.

There is also downtime for crafting, training animals, and side quests.

So TL;DR; Make sure your character has something interesting to do outside of combat.
