Best way to add SR to the Dark Young.

Advice

I need to find a way to SR to dark young for the my up coming encounter to make the it a reasonable challenge for my group. I found the fae touched template but I only want to add 1 to the CR of the dark young. Along with the dark young they will be facing a gug and several mi-go. Since none of these creatures gain access to money I can not justify a scroll of spell resistance and I will eat to much of my budget to get a mi-go caster of 9th level. Not sure how much of my budget adding SR to the heavy in the encounter would be worth.

Edit: Forgot to mention that I wand CR 15 encounter for 5 PCs.

It's as simple as saying "the dark young has SR now."

Give them a SR of 11+HD for strong SR, 7+HD for moderate or 3+HD for weak.

Also SR is not a fun mechanic to play against, adding it to every combat will make the spell casters of your party really annoyed, and a really annoyed spell caster is even more likely to break your game in half. Know this from personal experience.

Thanks for the input on the amounts to use but i am not sure how much they exp out of my budget the different amounts of SR would add to an encounter.

The Exchange

have the spell already cast on them by a trap or something.

@gebeticdrift that works fine but what is the CR of trap that cast SR once and then needs to be rearmed and can not be prevented by the players?

I don't know what's so difficult about simply giving them SR 23 and not altering their CR one point.

However, a scroll of spell resistance at caster level 11 provides SR 23. It costs 1375 gp. Easily in range for even a slow advancement CR 12. Take it out of the treasure budget instead of XP budget.

Well a CR 12 character has a budget to spend on items that he can use I thought monsters were not supposed to use the items they guard. If they did then they would be much tougher. If a dragon gets to use its hoard in combat then it will be leagues tougher then what is written in the bestiary.

adding SR should be as simple I Hate Nickelback says. As GM you can change stuff about a monster as you see fit. You know your table and can tailor the beastie as needed to be a good challenge for your player.

Add the SR and give +10% ad-hoc xp. tadaa.

Yeah, the Bestiary stats are written on paper, not stone. Feel free to alter them to your own heart's desire. And I wouldn't really think just adding a bit of SR would up the CR to any real degree. Oh no, the wizurd has a tough time. Boo f*+*in' hoo.
