Laughing Touch crit?

Rules Questions

This seems like a silly question, but I don't want to assume a player can't do something.

Since it requires a "hit roll" it appears to be eligible for crits.

Would this mean if a Fey Sorceress scores a critical hit with her laughing touch attack, the opponent is stuck laughing for 2 rounds instead of 1?

Shadow Lodge

I would say so, but I'm sure others would not. If this turns out to be true, could you take improved critical laughing touch?

No, because "A critical hit means that you roll your damage more than once." Laughing Touch does no damage and there is nothing in there about extending the duration. A natural 20 just means that you hit in this case.

No, but you certainly can take Improved Critical Touch Attack.

We were playing first edition and my sorceress laughing touched a bandit then moved away, the dm was wondering if I provoked if he could attack me. Doesn't really explain it in 1st edition anyway.

Threatened Squares: You threaten all squares into which you can make a melee attack, even when it is not your turn. Generally, that means everything in all squares adjacent to your space (including diagonally). An enemy that takes certain actions while in a threatened square provokes an attack of opportunity from you. If you're unarmed, you don't normally threaten any squares and thus can't make attacks of opportunity.

In order to make an AoO you need to threaten a square. Since Laughing touch prevents you from making anything but a move action you are not threatening a square while under Laughing Touch. So, no you cannot make an AoO while under a laughing touch.

This has nothing to do with the original topic and even if it did that was 13 years ago. In the future it would be better to start a new thread instead of posting in a old thread that has nothing to do with your question.

Fey Bloodline Laughing Touch (Sp)[mind afct]: melee touch attack on crtr to laugh for 1 rnd, uses [3+CHA]/d. A laughing creature can only take a move action but can defend itself normally. Thereafter immune to your Laughing Touch for 24 hours.

It doesn't say helpless or forbid AoO (if you consider that "defend itself normally"). I do agree that since an attack is a standard action and it only has a move action the target shouldn't be able to attack or make an AoO. Sadly creatures just standing there with a weapon in hand threaten adjacent squares but that's just part of the requirements. It's a bit of a gray area for your GM.

Like many Necros - it really just brought the question up again.

Advice
As a sorcerer/wizard in melee you should employ long arm:T1, illusion of calm:I1, or spectral hand:N2 for touch attacks. At least try not to be killed.

the melee touch is a d20 attack roll but as it does no damage there's nothing to multiply. see Combat: Standard Actions Critical Hits.

As usual, it is not technical language, so, for this question, it can be read two ways:

- "You threaten all squares into which you can make a melee attack," + "You threaten ... even when it is not your turn."
or
- "if you can make a melee attack in a square even if it isn't your turn, you threaten it."

Personally, I use the first interpretation. If you are prevented from potentially making attacks during your turn, you can't make attacks of opportunity (unless whatever stopped your ability to attack says something different).
