Large Tripping a Medium Creature...Attack of Opportunity

Rules Questions

So, a Mintotaur (with no special Feats) is Large and has a 10' reach with his Greataxe. If he is 10' away from a human and performs a Trip Attack with the weapon, does the Medium Creature get an Attack of Opportunity....or is the Large Creature to far away?

Thanks.

The minotaur provokes an AoO from everyone taht caould hit it. The human in question have to be able to hit it (like with a polearm), if he is unable to do so cause the minotaur is far away then there is no AoO.

Ok, so if the human only has a non-reach weapon (such as a longsword) and has no Feats or Spells that enhance his reach.....then the Minotaur is safe to perform the Trip as the human targeted cannot reach him.

However, if another Medium creature was within striking distance he would get an AoO on the Minotaur.

OK, makes sense. Thanks.

Yes, for that reason I heavily use combat maneuvers as a DM. it is also a good trick for polearm wileders or people with the lunge feat.

Maneuvers only provoke from the target, not everybody around.

Whoa! Even better! I think I suspected that but it seemed too good to be true.

Thanks a bunch.

Yep, i stand corrected.

That's a trick I used to use in 3.5 to keep big solo creatures from getting overwhelmed. When the melee rush in, you use your AoOs to trip them and ruin their movement. It works a lot better if the creature has combat reflexes.
