Increasing the hit die limit of a spell?

Advice

A member of my gaming group was asking me earlier about a feat\trait\ability that he remembers seeing.

Essentially, the ability allowed you to increase the hit die limit of a spell. For example, Daze has a limit that it only affects creatures of 4 or fewer HD; he seems to remember an ability that would allow you to alter the spell to affect a 5 HD (or 6 HD, etc.) creature.

Anyone aware of what this might be?

My first thought upon reading the title was Intensify Spell metamagic feat, but that's not what you're describing and I do not recall seeing anything like that. Sorry.

This rings a very faint bell. I think you might check the additional sorceror bloodlines in the APG... but I'm probably wrong.

A heavens orcale can reduce the level target for the effects of illusion pattern spells by their Cha modififer.

I'll bet that's the one I so vaguely recalled.

That Oracle revelation - Awesome Display - is what he was thinking of. Thanks! :)

To be accurate it does not raise the HD limit, it just lowers effective HD of the target.

Yup. Basically he was looking at the possibility of trying to make a character focused around Color Spray, heh.

Here's the major problem... being a level 1 spell color spray becomes fairly useless at high levels, The best approach is for him to take the Heavens Oracle class and spend feats on things such as spell focus, Heighten spell, enlarge spell, and remember that there are other spells relevant like Rainbow Pattern.

You can keep colorspray very powerful around level 10. After that it is hard to keep the CHA high enough to keep it viable.

After that you should get the other pattern spells

Actually, even at high levels, Color Spray is still a decent spell. At capped out HD (5+) by default, an aoe stun is still viable. Add Heighten Spell to raise the DC.

Granted by this time you have a lot of other options...

In PFS style I have a level 8 that does this.

The DC is not the issue that slows Colorspray down. My dual cursed oracle sorcerer has a 25 dc you need to make three times. The issue is the HD going past yoru cha modifier +5. Unless the DM gives out massive treasure your cha does not grow fast enough to keep up with the HDs. Hard fights will be beyod your one and done spell.

Granted that is just colorspray. Mine uses aqueous orb, create pit, minor illusion and grease often too. So you will have other options.

I am just sayign the OP level 1 colorspray tends to weaken at mid levels.
