Vorpal for Limbs?

Rules Questions

So, Vorpal Weapons can behead someone on a natural 20 that is confirmed. I'm looking through the list of magical weapon qualities, is there something that specializes in severing limbs? That would certainly help me go Zatoichi on mooks.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Back in the bad old days (1st ed. AD&D), "Sharpness" was an ability that could be put on a slashing weapon. Like a low-powered Vorpal, it severed a random limb when you rolled properly.

Nothing like that exists in RAW, but it's easy enough to homebrew up. There's a discussion happening elsewhere about whether +5 is really appropriate for Vorpal. But whatever you think Vorpal is worth, I'd say Sharpness is probably cheaper and more fun.

Back in the day there were "Sharpness" weapons (I.E. "Sword of Sharpness") which did that for limbs, but they haven't existed for awhile for the same reason PF doesn't have crit charts for specific locations.

So answer is: I don't think they exist in Paizo products, but there are probably equivalents in third-party products.

edit: Ninja'd by a mindflayer! Oh the humanity!

In PF, no. The books all say that vorpal is an addition to a slashing weapon that can BEHEAD a creature on a natural 20.

Pathfinder Core Rulebook wrote:

Vorpal: This potent and feared ability allows the weapon to sever the heads of those it strikes. Upon a roll of natural 20 (followed by a successful roll to confirm the critical hit), the weapon severs the opponent's head (if it has one) from its body. Some creatures, such as many aberrations and all oozes, have no heads. Others, such as golems and undead creatures other than vampires, are not affected by the loss of their heads. Most other creatures, however, die when their heads are cut off. A vorpal weapon must be a slashing melee weapon. If you roll this property randomly for an inappropriate weapon, reroll.

Strong necromancy and transmutation; CL 18th; Craft Magic Arms and Armor, circle of death, keen edge; Price +5 bonus.

Is this how it SHOULD, NO. It should be able to remove limbs on critical threats and be able to be applied to blugeoning weapons because they could just as easily lop of heads, but this is what we (the PFRPG players) are stuck with

Monk, buddy, it's gonna be ok. Serenity now.

Mindflayer and Factcat, thanks a ton brosefs! I'm gonna go digging for that AD&D ability.
