Just crossed my mind while reading the latest CLW wand thread.
How often do you thank other players out-of-character or PCs in-character for having your back?
Whether it's healing, using consumables to help you out, someone stepping ahead of you and taking damage that otherwise would have been heading your way, or someone who neutralized a threat bearing down on you, do you express gratitude to those fellow players?

Every time I play. Even if it is for nothing, especially in a PFS game, I am always sure to thank the other players for playing and the GM for GMing. For in game help, my barbarian is not very vocal, but thanks to other players always goes a long way. In my experience many PFS players are the same way.

Hrm. I never really thought about it. I guess I've probably thanked those who have done something particularly helpful, like casting a buff spell or saving my bacon in some way, and I've probably been thanked for the same stuff, just never really took notice of it.
Come to think of it, no one ever seems to thank someone for dealing lots of damage or landing a debuff or crowd control effect (unless it saves their life in the nick of time). Maybe it doesn't mentally register as a service, since there's not something clearly traveling from one PC to another?

In our groups,we all have reasons to frequently thank each other. We are generally team players who've been playing together long before Pathfinder ever appeared on the scene.

Honestly, I've never really paid that much attention to whether or not thanks go flying around the table as the crowds I tend to game with generally have such a positive feedback loop that specific thanks really only pop up when thanking the players for playing and the GM for GMing.
Well, that and impeccably timed acts of heroism and awesomeness.
As a player, and as a GM, I always try to thank my fellow gamers for a fun and entertaining gaming experience, though I realize I may occasionally fail to do so if a scenario ended on an especially sour note. Thankfully, this tends to be a rare occurrence and I still try really hard to remember to give my thanks even if I'm frustrated at the outcome of a game.

I try to thank every player for every heal, every buff, or every debuff they apply that keeps something else from hurting me. Especially if it's a buff that lets me land a killing blow, or a debuff that lets a crippling spell land.
Partly because I am sincerely thankful.
Partly to encourage them to keep doing those things.
And partly to highlight the fact that there are ways for a character to shine other than SoD or DPR.

It all depends on the character Im playing.
As the player I always thank the gm for running the game. Guess I was brought up Courteous :)
My Dumb Barbarian often ask for help to use his Spirit stick (Healing Wand). I dont believe he has ever said thankyou though.
My Musket Master is more socially adept so remembers the plesantries.
My Cleric of Mephistopheles believes in being the perfect Host. He is constantly offering healing before people even ask for it.

I thank players pretty often for doing something fun, cool or well played.
People seem to thank me pretty often a I tend to be a bloody boy scout and tend to be able to save the day quite often.
I do get a thanks for running pretty much every game I have run.
So we seem to have well mannered people around here :) .

Heck, I don't thank the people in my real life as much as I should - so I know I often miss it in game. I do try, so I guess that's part way right?
edit:
here's something I've done before though... I do suggest it too.
If you want to say "thank you" to your judge at a con in a way he will remember? buy him a drink before his next game. Heck, I've looked up a judge after a game at a Con, as he was starting his next slot, to drop off a cold bottled water. No need to even say anything (he's prepping to run his next slot anyway). and even if he doesn't drink it, he's likely to use it to clean off his Maps!

I think mine probably depends on the situation, but I do always try to be thankful. If they simply cast a buff spell on me (Bull's Str, etc), Im probably mroe likely to say 'SWEEET!' than 'thanks', but not out of a sense of ingratitude.
If its a life or death situation, or someone really puts their character or their resources out there for me, then I give a sincere thank you and (not to say Im not a team player all the time) try to repay them as best as I can within the confines of the game.

Last time I gamed in my normal group, I brought home made cookies (but then my PC is a cook - and he brings copies of the recipes to give out in character)
6 cups shredded Mwangi coconut
5 cups granulated Mwangi sugar
3 cups all-purpose flour
6 fresh chicken eggs
1/4 cup melted cows butter
1 tablespoon light Mwangi rum
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
DIRECTIONS:
In the large bowl, combine all of the ingredients and beat until thoroughly mixed. Cover the bowl and chill for 1 hour.
Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F. Line a baking sheet with parchment or wax paper.
Roll the cookie dough into 1-inch balls and place them 2 inches apart on the baking sheet.
Bake for 10 minutes, or until browned on the bottom and around the edges. Cool the cookies on a wire rack. Store in an airtight container & transports well in a Handy Haversack.
