So in a game this weekend, I was playing my new gunslinger, and a difference of opinion arose surrounding the cover mechanic. So I'd like some clarification on a couple of situations. In all situations A represents me, B represents one of my party members, and C represents the monster. Each X is an open 5 foot square. Assume A, B, and C are all medium creatures. Tell me for each one if C has cover from me.

2. AXXXBXXXC
3. AXBXXXXXC
4. ABC

C has cover from you in all scenarios.
Deciding on cover for ranged weapons:
Pick a corner in a space you occupy: Can a straight line drawn from that corner reach all the corners of the square you're trying to hit without going through any obstacles? If yes, then the space has no cover from you.
I don't see how any of your scenarios are any different from each other.

I seem to remember something where if the object providing cover is closer to the shooter, it doesn't provide cover. I don't know where I'm getting that from, though, because it's not anywhere in the cover rules.
Edit: I found it. It's in the "Low obstacles and cover part". I guess we just carried it over to all cover.

That's for cover from low walls or similar things.
In the four examples provided, the enemy has cover in all situations (+4 to its AC). Coupled with the possibility of reach, two of those scenarios could also have the firing into melee penalty for an 8 point swing in the bad guy's favor.
You'll notice that "firing into melee" only applies to adjacent characters. Characters attacking with the benefit of reach don't apply in the "firing into melee" rule.
