Is the Dual talent Alternate Racial Trait also a Racial Trait ?

Advice

Simple noob question. I understand how Dual Talent works - sacrificing the human bonus feat and the skill point per level to get +2 to an extra stat.

However what I am unclear on is whether Dual Talent also counts as one of your two allowed traits for organised play. If I take Dual Talent do I still get to choose two normal traits?

No. Despite the similar names, alternate 'racial traits' and 'traits' (including the even more confusingly named 'race traits') are completely different things.

Yes.

Yeah, I was confused too. But they are different things, normal traits don't require you give up anything.

Sometimes I wonder if this question would come up less often if people were working from books/PDFs more often than they were doing searches in databases. That is, when you're looking at the APG and come to the section on "Traits", there's all these similar-feeling things all listed and categorized and it's pretty obvious what's going on. Meanwhile, over in an entirely different part of the book (or in the ARG), where there's write-ups of races and it's all about the race and there's no mention of the general trait rules, the context and formatting all has a very different feel from the Traits list.

But then if someone's making a character and utilizing the SRD or other online sources to decide on their various options, maybe they think "Okay, need two traits. I wonder if there's anything cool that's specific to my race? Search: human traits." And lo and behold, they get results in isolation, with no context or sorting or format-based clues to let them know that "one of these things is not like the others".

Not a critique against anyone/anything, though. This is just the sort of thing I think about in the back of my mind all the time. ;)

The real question is why Paizo used the word "traits" to describe two different things. Don't they own a thesaurus?
