Looking to make a npc hobgoblin fighter, CR 2 conversion, so 3rd level fighter. I have a few questions.
Taking pit boss racial trait gives whip proficiency and +1 to disarm and trip.
Weapon focus whip
And whip mastery
Not sure of third feat.
Also if base to base with one pc, and attempt to attack another with reach, this won't provoke, but will I get a penalty for cover?
Figure this is a great way to do dissarms and trips without the feats.

Combat maneuvers provoke attacks of opportunity from the target, not from everyone nearby.
If you attempt to attack through an occupied square, you may have to deal with cover. In most circumstances, a 5' step should avoid the problem.

I wouldn't suggest Power Attack or Cleave for a whip-wielding bard. For one thing, you're going to need 2-3 feats just to make whips usable.
Combat Reflexes may be more appropriate, considering a whip's reach and a Bard's ability at spellcasting.
Bard? I thought this was a hobgoblin fighter.
Combat reflexes is good, but since agile maneuvers wasn't an obvious choice I didn't think the DEX was that high. Of course, if the character is an 18-20 DEX hobgoblin fighter then agile maneuvers is probably the better choice since a whip character has threatening problems until level 5 and the combat reflexes can wait a level.
The point of cleave is to punish the PCs for cluster buffing with touch range spells.

OOPS! I mixed up two threads with whip-users in them. The other one was a bard.
