Random Background Generator - Link

With the popularity of my Random Treasure Generator, I decided to write another small tool before moving on with my usual updates. Thankfully, Paizo released a new and amazing book titled Ultimate Campaign. Lo and behold, this product had a nifty Random Background Generator inside of its pages. It is these tables I have moved into code and published onto the web for all of you to use.

While the core of the generator makes use of Ultimate Campaign, I did add a few other areas I thought might be useful.

Gender: You can choose your gender, or let the tool pick it randomly. Transgender/Genderqueer will be chosen 1% of the time, with Male and Female being chosen roughly equally the rest of the time.

Race: You can randomly choose your race, and specify whether you wish to only choose from the Core races, or from some Non-Core races. Since parts of the background depend on race, I only included Non-Core races I thought could fit with a Human background (which they will use, if rolled). I may play around with what is available in this as time goes on.

Class: Randomly pick your class. Nothing to explain here.

Alignment/Religion: Normally, you don't get to Alignment until the Moral Conflict section. At that point, you roll on a few tables to gain CP (Conflict Points). You then manually choose your 'resolution' to this (which reduces or increases your CP) and can then spend those to choose your alignment. Religion is similarly manual.

The random part I added here allows you to choose your alignment and religion (as they are somewhat tied) randomly. The tool will follow the Moral Conflict part as expected, but randomly choose your Resolution. After this, it will pick any alignment that fits the total CP gained.

For religion, the tool will pick if you follow a deity of the same alignment (50% of the time), a deity of an alignment one step away (40% of the time), or a deity of an alignment two steps away (10% of the time). It will then choose one from the available Core deities. I toyed with including other non-core ones, but since the system expects you to gain access to an associated religious trait, I didn't want to screw with it too much.

There is also a 25% chance that your character doesn't follow a deity at all, either because they are undecided or does not follow religion at all.

Age/Height/Weight: Another option, you can choose to have the tool randomly pick your age, height, and weight. This uses your race and gender and the Advanced Race Guide's tables to decide.

If you have any questions, let me know!

This tool is like an awesome game of mad-libs. I got a half-orc rogue who was raised in a giant full-orc family, and his conflict was lying to a small child or elderly person for pleasure and feeling no remorse about it. Sounds like a pretty good guy.

No way! This is great!

I got a skinny little cold-hearted (yet, lovesick) half-elf ranger who, under the influence of fiend, hunts his own kind. Needless to say, he has never been in a relationship.

This guy has anti-hero written all over him.

Epic!

Now I'm conflicted between using this, because it's easier, or the actual Ultimate Campaign, because real dice :)
But it's definitely awesome, and just got a place in my bookmarks.

This is too good

Thanks for the feedback and compliments thus far! Happy to hear it's getting used and you all are enjoying it. :)

I do have an update. I added on some of the options from Quests & Campaigns. This includes a full random Race selection (including some Races I left off earlier), Human Ethnicity, and Nationality.

I also added a note if a non-core race is used that the Homeland section has to pick a core race, and it uses the Human selection. As such, while most things should fit, not everything will make perfect sense (IE: half-elf brother for a goblin PC).

Enjoy!

Very cool. I fully expect my lazy players to use this instead of using any of the precious time to write something for me. <Grin>
