Is there a way by which a PC's magic doohickeys could be somehow fused with his body, even hidden within it? The player would still be able to remove and don them, but without detect magic others wouldn't see them?
It's a matter of personal taste. I like the idea of the powerful, heroic character able to achieve amazing deeds, but I hate that most of them end up walking about looking like they shopped at a cheap Halloween store.
Anyway, just wondering.

Aside from implanting ioun stones (which IIRC are not removable and are also dangerous/laborous to do), tattoos (some of which can be permanent, not 1-use style), and permenancied spells, I'm pretty sure the answer is no. You could always house rule something though.
That said, depending on what kind of functionality you're looking for, regular slot-less items can be used for most things (aside from stuff like weapons and shields). Ioun stones are slotless, although they do still visibly show. If you don't even want the stones to be visible, you can hide them in wayfinders. You can also make your own custom slotless items, or other pre-existing ones (aside from ioun stones I think the list is pretty short).
Big downside/note: slotless items cost double the price of one that would be slotted, and for good reason (1. get the benefit of that slot without having to occupy that slot 2. object can be very small and easily hidden)

Well, if it's just lighting up like a Halloween trick or treater when scanned with Detect Magic that you're trying to avoid, then may I suggest the trick one of my fellow players uses, namely Magic Aura. It makes a magical item appear as if non-magical to detect spells, and can only be seen through with Identify. It's a level 1 spell, lasts 1 day/level and doesn't have a material component, so as long as you have a Bard or Sorcerer/Wizard, who you are willing to supply with level 1 Pearls of Power, you can keep those items from being detected.
As for fusing them with your epic heroes, I've never heard of such a thing, though Arizhel and Joesi seem to know what they're talking about.

I might house rule a spell or something that lets characters "hide" their gewgaws on their persons from sight. Permanent invisibility would work, as well, I suppose.
In general I get tired of the magic item necessity that many fantasy RPGs seem to require, or at least highly tout. I love magic stuff, don't get me wrong. Otherwise I'd not be playing this game. I just think it's silly that a character could walk into the seediest bar in the worst town in the lowliest kingdom and everyone in it know that he's loaded for dire owlbear just by looking at him. That, or he's lost on his way to a drag show.

Who says they have to be flashy? Sure, there's some magic items that have powers built into how they look, and most have a fluff description, but it's magic. Who says the Belt of Physical Perfection can't look like a perfectly normal belt to the untrained eye? Same for the Hat of Disguise or the Gloves of Dueling or any of the magic items in the book. Or they could wear their magical gear under normal, mundane gear, like wearing a necklace under their armour. As for armour and weapons, there's the Glamered special quality to make them look mundane. And, as I mentioned before, with Magic Aura even the trained eye couldn't pick up on the item's more valuable nature, without a close examination.

Over the decades there have been various ways to approach this. There was a 3.0 spell from Song & Silence that allowed you to conceal a weapon in your own body, although that was for smuggling/safekeeping since you couldn't use it. 2nd and 3rd edition psionics included the graft weapon ability, which did more of the sort of thing you're thinking of. 3rd Ed also offered magical grafts in Fiend Folio in the Eberron setting.

If only there were a way to change how your clothes looked, or even alter your entire appearance. What's really terrible is that you can't just create your own items to make them look how you like, or add those abilities to your already color-coordinated outfit.
