Stacking Crit multipliers

Rules Questions

Lantern Lodge

Hey, just a quick question. I've been looking at the Kensai Magus for a bit, and was thinking of building a high dpr/high ac build. The question I have is presented by two of thier abilities.

If the kensai confirms a critical hit, he can instead spend 2 points from his arcane pool to increase his weapon's critical multiplier by 1. This ability replaces spell recall.

Any attacks made with that weapon automatically confirm all critical threats and have their damage multiplier increased by 1 (×2 becomes ×3, for example). In addition, he cannot be disarmed while wielding a weapon of this type.

Would I be able to get my weapon from a x2 multiplier to a x4 when I'm level 20 and use 2 arcane points on a crit? Thanks for the help!

Yes, they should indeed stack.

Grand Lodge

No it doesn't stack. They are not two different effects, only one that gets better at 20th.

What happens at level 20 is that every crit threat automatically confirms.

So it means instead of sometimes getting the benefit of a critical hit, you will always get the critical effect if you threathen.

Err... I'm not seeing it. They are two different class features, with different names; one requires spending arcane pool, one is automatic.

I don't see any reason they wouldn't stack.

Yeah I can't see why they wouldn't stack. I dunno what lazarx is talking about.

I mis read.

They do stack but not to a x4. using general guidelines, two doubles stacking yields a triple.

If they don't stack to a 4 there would be no point in using both LazarX. If the base weapon is two and both the other abilities increase by one it would have to be 4 or one of the two abilities does nothing.

I would say they probably stack, but its balanced by the fact that it can only be done a limited number of times per day (based on how many arcane pool points they have).

Lets estimate that at level 20 the Kensai will have a int modifier of +10 (which requires an int of 30), that would give him 20 points in his arcane pool. Which means he could only do this 10 times per day, but it would use up all his arcane pool points and he would be unable to do anything else with the arcane pool.

Anyone wielding a weapon with an 18-20 crit range and either keen or improved critical is going to score 1 or 2 critical hits a round. So in 10 rounds of combat the magus will exhaust all his arcane points if he does this. The important part as a GM is to make sure that there are more fights after this to give regular melee characters a chance to look good.

Neither abilities double anything, they add 1 to the multiplier. 2+1+1=4 however you cut it.
