Does taking an AoO provoke?

Rules Questions

Does taking an attack of opportunity with an attack/action that would normally provoke, do so during the AoO?

For example, you have the feats necessary to allow you to threaten with a bow. You take the AoO that was provoked, but there's someone at melee with you. Do they get to attack you after you're done with your attack?

The specific feat has language saying that the AoOs you take WITH THAT FEAT do not provoke.

So no, not in that specific case.

lol So it does. I read the feat and decided to use it weeks ago, and just now thought of that question. Should've re-read first.

Scarab Sages

I think using an AoO to Trip, for example, would provoke, though, right? Unless you had Improved Trip or something that said otherwise?

Interesting. What happens if the provoked AoO is also a trip without the improved trip feat?

1. Monster moves.
2. PC takes AoO, tries to trip without improved trip.
3. Monster gets AoO, tries to trip the PC without improved trip.
4. PC has already taken his attack of opportunity this round and can't take another one, unless he has Combat Reflexes...?

1 person marked this as a favorite.

4. PC has combat reflexes he tries to disarm w/o imporved disarm

5. Monster has combat reflexes too and, he tries to disarm w/o imporved disarm
6. PC decides to make an unarmed strike without improved unarmed strike.
7. Monster...And so on.

I want to see this happen some day. :)

So technically the AoOs would continue until either the monster or the PC ran out of AoOs, and then they'd all be resolved in the order they were provoked.

Which kind of reminds me of those cartoon fight clouds where you can hear fierce fighting but you can't see anything until the dust settles and both toons are covered in scratches, their clothes are torn, and they have giant black eyes.

It reminds me of a counter chain in magic the gathering

Well an AoO is before the action that caused it.

So in my example the monster would calw the PC. The PC would punch the monster if he survived. The monster would disarm with a penalty of the damage dealt from the punch. The PC would do the same. and so on

Can you make trip attempts on an AoO? I've always figured you could only make basic regular attacks.

Or really any time the stack full of instants and interrupts.

You can Trip, Disarm, and Sunder, the three combat maneuvers that substitute for melee attacks. Others require special actions, usually a standard action in length.

Thanks!
