Need helping to challenge a Synthesist PC

Carrion Crown

So one of my players (level 4) is playing a Synthesist Summoner and I am having a hard time throwing anything up that can harm him. We are just entering Harrow Stone Prison tonight and I wanted to make him fear the place. He has a AC of around 25 (he has mage armor up) and I can't seem to get through it. He Melees as he has three attacks right now and does a decent amount of damage. I thought of targeting him with Brother Charlatan but being a caster he has a higher will save then most. Any thoughts or suggestions would be welcome.

Make him make saves. His wisdom won't be crazy good, so he's only a couple points better at Will than Big Dumb Fighter. Also, it won't hurt anything but his feelings, but make him feel bad for dumping his action economy by playing synthesist.

The good thing about Carrior Crown is that there are plenty incorporeal foes that hit Touch AC, so his sky-high AC does not mean that much. His Touch AC should be around 17-18. Use ghosts!

Chuck a swarm at him :)

His AC won't help him as much against touch attacks (see all the incorporeal enemies, Old Ember Maw) or Maximized Magic Missiles (see Splatterman) or "Make a Will save or be f%!~ed b%@&@!" (see: Father Charlatan, other enemies).

You can have even more fun when you get towards the end of book 2.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Yeah, that's why synthesists get banned in a lot of games.

Swarms are nice because they hit automatically and can't be affected by normal attacks. You can also consider traps that require reflex or fortitude saves.

Unfortunately, things will get worse for you as the character gets stronger and stronger.

Not to be a broken record (which, admittedly, I am) but Synthesists are all flash and no fire. The reason they get banned so often is because it's incredibly easy for one to upstage a mediocre barbarian, and GMs perceive it as a caster rather than a meleer.

The relevant differences between a summoner and a synth are that you can't ignore a synth's eidolon and go straight for the synth, and that the eidolon doesn't get its own actions. A summoner could just as easily have a 25 AC beast killing everything for him; they're legit targets for Mage Armor too.

I think the problem you're facing is that some classes have easy ways to have ridiculous AC at low levels. Rather than waste your attacks targeting him, take out the squishier members of the group, and when it comes time to make some saves, make sure he's one of the ones who has to roll them. Also, you mention he does decent damage. He'll do decent to good damage, but Carrion Crown loves its DR, and eidolons with lots of natural attacks hate DR because there are few ways to get natural attacks to count as other materials, and there are going to be very few ways he could qualify for even Eldritch Claws, and the synth's eidolon sadly gets zero feats to help him out. He'll grow to hate werewolves and vampires so much.

Be glad he's not a regular or Master Summoner.

Also, whenever you can, hit him with maneuvers and grapples if his CMD isn't too high. And if his CMD is very high, he's probably large and make sure to impose the penalties for squeezing into small places where applicable.

Thank you all for the advice!! We just wrapped up the fight with the splatterman and I used him to do a lot of touch attacks on him. That helped out greatly. Though he claims that his Edioln's claws count as Magical which I need to check on.

He has to buy an Evolution (Magic Attacks, 1 point) for it, but it's possible.

Or take the Arcane Strike feat... which is a pretty good feat for him anyway.

I played a synth summoner when we played Carrion Crown, and the problems I, as player, encountered, were DR. I dealt pretty good damage versus standard monsters, but the groups paladin really owned anything with DR.

My synth summoner had a lot of buffs going, especially on the higher levels. I groaned whenever I encountered a dispel magic. A quick dispel could easily take out my Mage Armor, my Shield, my Barkskin, and that would take me down 8-10 points AC.
