At a table noone is supposed to be "The Boss", be it player or DM. Seems like you have both kinds at your table.

If you don't mind an extra feat tax, just pick up
Hellcat Stealth
end of story, you can hide even if your enemies have true seeing.

The wizard should have an illusion doppelganger (or better yet a Bard follower playing the 'part' of the wizard). Then the wizard is hiding behind some curtains, Wizard of Oz style. That should buy your BBEG another round.

Oh, and maybe he has an artifact that allows him to teleport, despite the Dimension Lock. Or at the very least, a contingency spell or two to make it look like he teleported away.

Excellent idea, wouldn't a simulacrum work perfect for this, since the BBEG has knowledge of the party using true seeing and lifesense? But i am afraid that would result in an impossible scenario for the PC's, even if it would be totally reasonable for the BBEG to use such tactics. Still worried that many people will fall on the dreadful Prismatic wall, resulting in an inevitable death for the unlucky ones.

@Haraldlak
Guilty as charged for the toys, but why wouldn't the powerful mage try to finish the fight quickly using his arsenal? I am not trying to defend anything here, i am just trying to be fair to the PC's and NPC's alike. The truth is i am having second thoughts and plan to re-ask my players if they want their victory to be clear, or partially supported by me.

I am afraid the entire Region of has a permanent Dimensional Lock, none can teleport, not even the BBEG.

Hello everyone, i need to seek some input on the following spell selection, for a forthcoming BBEG fight. I am trying to be sure that it will be a fair fight that will not leave the players with a bitter taste afterwards.
The BBEG will be a 19 (not 20 because that nat-20 on the initiative roll is too much) level Diviner Wizard and the party of 5 has an APL=16.
On the First round of combat, the BBEG will cast Time Stop, then Prismatic Wall, followed by a Wish that will emulate Control Winds, which will create a tornado pushing the players towards the Prismatic Wall with a Fortitude DC and a Strength Check as per the rules. If there is another round of Time-Stop, the BBEG will summon Greater Air Elementals that will try to push those who stood their ground onto the Wall.
I have already asked my players if they are ok with their opponents being played to their best potential, and they have no issues. Also the BBEG (who is more or less an ambiguous personality) will beg the PC's not to attack him and leave peacefully. How would you feel against these odds?

1 person marked this as a favorite.

If i may ask, why do you hate the fourth book so much?

As with all the modules i used the map of the area as the basis and added all necessary info on it through paint. This way i only had to look one image to remember everything. I could send one image to you on e-mail, if you would like.

How about that one player who can translate the inscription knows the "language" because it is something like a legacy code for his family or region, this will show him that there is a connection between him and the statue, and perhaps it was a message left by himself TO himself before he died (or became lost in time?) thousands of years ago, so that he may do better and avert a far greater evil.
So, when he reads it loud, it could display himself, through an illusion, far older than his current age, explaining him that must descend down into the base of the statue and find something hidden for millenia?

The good thing about Carrior Crown is that there are plenty incorporeal foes that hit Touch AC, so his sky-high AC does not mean that much. His Touch AC should be around 17-18. Use ghosts!

What i used: Waterfall Castle

And it so conveniently happened that the only Kobold left alive was the most peaceful one, a decent family guy that was forced to live in an evil society, and one that the players were supposed to know would not hurt anyone ever again. Do not punish a player for playing a paladin, like this.

Do not forget that a paladin is also obliged to apply justice, and he did. A game where paladins are lawful stupid or stripped of their abilities is so cliche and boring.
Luckily my DM has done away with the awful paladin restrictions, to allow real role-playing decisions, not fixed ones.

But what about the new saving throw as is stated in the Fascinated Condition, since many creatures are potential threats?

Fascinated:
Fascinated

A fascinated creature is entranced by a supernatural or spell effect. The creature stands or sits quietly, taking no actions other than to pay attention to the fascinating effect, for as long as the effect lasts. It takes a –4 penalty on skill checks made as reactions, such as Perception checks. Any potential threat, such as a hostile creature approaching, allows the fascinated creature a new saving throw against the fascinating effect. Any obvious threat, such as someone drawing a weapon, casting a spell, or aiming a ranged weapon at the fascinated creature, automatically breaks the effect. A fascinated creature's ally may shake it free of the spell as a standard action.

Yes i would let that in my games as well, though it's not very clear.
