Can one drop a archetype? I remember seeing that somewhere.

Maybe in Ultimate Campaign, but not outside of that (or DM fiat).

Like it's hot?

You can't change your archetypes after you've chosen one...unless it's a Paladin's Vow. They can change those, but those are a pretty unique situation. Well, there's another one that you can drop if certain conditions are met. But the archetype needs special rules to do this, since you can't normally drop it without GM approval. Or Ultimate Campaign, but you know, that's GM approval too.

You can also drop Dawnflower Dervish (bard)... sortof (which may've been the one Cheapy was referencing)...

Isn't it the case that 'Oathbound' is the paladin archetype and the oaths are features of said archetype?

Sort of.

Quote:
When a paladin completes the sacred promise, the oath is fulfilled, and she may abandon the oath if she so chooses; she may then select another oath or become a standard paladin or a different paladin archetype.

The Exchange

Can I ask for a clarification, DrDeth? By 'drop an archetype', do you mean 'stop getting the archetype benefits, keeping the ones I already have and gaining the benefits of the core class from that point on'? Or do you mean 'remove all the archetype benefits I've already received, and get the core class benefits for those levels in their place'?

I'm pretty sure that in both cases it's a GM's call, but I feel the two situations are distinct.

#2. Go back to Core.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

In that case, I think it's probably only going to be possible with the permission of the GM, who will have to hand-wave any past events in which you only succeeded/failed because of the qualities the archetype gave you. Ask real nice, because I'm pretty sure you have no rules-as-written to cite indicating that it's legal.

With the exception of the Dawnflower Dervish bard. ;)
