Just wondering as was in just in a part of 4 Char and 5 npc we had a combat in a 20ft x 25x room against and 3 hex monster. Also in room were 2 bed and 2 tables. The only way my char could get into fihjt would have been to go under one of the tables and as there were already 4 peple in room attacking ogre I decided not to go in room.
After combat when DM was awarding out exp I did not get any as he said I should have gone into room. Is this far and also I think he should have informed me of this when I was deciding on going into room.
Now means out o a group of 4 I am 3 weeks behind 2 char and 2 weeks behind the other party due to lase session and mainly due to them getting me killed as my char main fighter of group and Ceric never healed me ran off with mage.

You should get experience when your GM says you get experience.
If you only gain experience from combat, expect to be expected to crawl under that table - or find another way to assist the combat.
Talk to your GM about when s/he awards experience, so that you're not disappointed in the future. Or make your next character a Tiny caster, so you can ride on someones shoulder and let your spells do the work.

Would have been difficult as in the previous combat I have been drained of 4 levels so was on -1 on acrobatic skills.
I just thought that there were too many people in combat already for what was in the room. Why I did not go in would have if DM had told me I would loose out on exp but then I should have been given the chance to do either.
I have DM in the past and would have awarded out exp to everyone as to do what did happens mean you are encouraging the old D&D mentality of its a monster kill it. Which was boring, was in a group of player years ago with this attitude and they attacked a large beetle only because they would get exp for it.

I think you need to have a conversation with the dm, it sounds to me like you guys have different impressions of the game. That said, its a pretty douchey move to cut a player out of xp due to an over crowded room especially when he has 4 levels drained.

Yeah our DM dings us after some big adventures, major plot points or if Characters come to some powerful realizations. It makes it easier to control the flow of the game and leveling itself feels cooler. It's not something you grind for and you enjoy the level you're on longer. It makes you more resourceful too because you use what you have in a lot of creative ways.

From the description, there was room for the character to enter the room and participate. Maybe not ideal, and with a possibility of a penalty (standing on the bed, balancing on top of a table or crouched under one), but still room. The player made a choice not to enter the room and participate, so I see it as totally fair to award no experience.
Even if there was no actual space in the room for another character, he could of still stood in the door way and threw something/shot at the monster.

If he's using the normal method of XP to level up, for him to award you 0 XP when you came to the session and participated (whether it was roleplaying or whatever) is unacceptable regardless of the fact you didn't make it into one combat scene. Could he have awarded you less? Sure. But to award you nothing is quite frankly bullshit. If you talk to him and he won't award you any then that's definitely the type of DM I would not go back to personally.
